Direct flight more expensive then connecting at Zurich

I am trying to get a ticket from Zurich to Dubai, return. When I do a direct flight it comes to 900CHF with Swiss. If I do a flight from Milan, via Zurich its 550CHF! I have no idea how that works.

Anyway, I want to know is, is it possible to just get on and off at Zurich without going to Milan? If I donít get the flight from Milan to Zurich, will they cancel the Dubai leg? Anyone else had something like this??

You must get on the plane in Milan or they will cancel the 2nd leg (or sell the seat to someone else if possible). Not sure of the reason for the price difference though.

The Milan - Dubai leg might be operated by a codeshare airline which still has some cheaper category seats in Economy.

If you can be flexible on your flight dates, you might find a cheaper ticket.

Going - you must catch the flight from Milan or your second leg will be cancelled.

Coming back, you don't have to go to Milan.

And you need to be travelling with carry-on luggage only, as any checked baggage will go to Milan.

What you're proposing is known as throw-away ticketing, and is prohibited by many airlines. We had a discussion on here a few months ago about whether this was permitted on SWISS or not, and the conclusion was that it's not specifically prohibited by the conditions of carriage, but that you probably wouldn't want to make a regular habit of it.

The reason it's more expensive to fly from Zurich to Dubai than from Milan-Zurich-Dubai is that you're paying for convenience. You might also find that it's cheaper to take a connecting flight from Zurich, eg Zurich-Paris-Dubai, than to take the direct SWISS flight.

Absolutely, and foreign airlines generally use cheaper pricing as a means to buying market share in the national carrier's market. I generally use www.ebookers.ch as a fairly accurate guide to the cheapest flights around. I look up Dubai leaving ZRH on 21st May for a week (as an example) and found the cheapest option to be Turkish Airlines via Istanbul at CHF 769 RT. Midweek, the same flights went down to CHF 654.

So it's worth playing around with the dates to see what works best.

First time you ever booked a flight? It is ALWAYS like this and no, nobody has the secret key how it really works... Airline tickets have the most complicated price plans of all products, on the same plane will very few people pay the same price as the price is continuously updated based on the booking situation in order to maximise income at a high level of seats sold. Add in a lot of completely intransparent special offers and you have no idea when to book what airline. Compare prices and book the cheapest.

The gulf airlines (Emirates, Etihad, Quatar) are very aggressively pricing, but sometimes you get a really weird deal. On my last flight to Asia the airline I expected least to be the cheapest beat them all, so I went with Lufthansa over Munich. Generally speaking is a direct flight nearly never the cheapest option.

No.. I've done this a few times - Just tell them that you want your bags tagged to ZRH only. Never had a problem.

Thanks for the sarcy comment, I think you completely missed the point. This is not about direct or in direct, but connecting at the "stop over" where you live.

Zurich to Dubai (via Swiss) = 900 CHF
Milan to Zurich, then Dubai (the same flight as above) = 650 CHF

I actually got the real answer, I met a guy who help develop a flight comparison website he said:

1) You have to go to the first leg of the trip (in this case Milan), you can't just get on at Zurich, if you don't turn up for the first leg, 95% of the time they will cancel the second part (other 5% is Airlines with poor admin)

2) But, on the way back you just get off at Zurich and get out. You just tell the check in person to tag your bags to the stop over and they will do so.

3) Most airlines price match (to a certain point) some more then others and depending on routes they are trying to dominate. They really price against the departure and destination, not the stop over. So thats why you get these weird price issues.

A good tip he gave was to do a "stop over" for a few days, so go to Milan by train, then do a 5 day stop over in Zurich (which is usually the same price or sometimes cheaper then same day connection). So you go to Milan for a weekend, fly back to Zurich, go to work, then get the cheaper flight to Dubai. Simples!

Couple of weeks ago I had to book 2 tickets short notice ZRH - LON return. Price on BA was 850chf, OK - short notice!! Then window popped up - do I want to hire a car - So I did for 3 days; total price for rental car including the flights 800chf.
I was happy but I have no clue how they calculate the prices....
Just wish I could have hired 2 cars & got the package even cheaper
