Basel to Düsseldorf: Fly or Train?

Am interested in people's opinion whether it is better to fly or take a train to Düsseldorf from Basel. Train is just over 4 hours. Its only an hour flight but with the time for getting to the airport and geting through security etc it is about the same time. With a train you can also pack easier. However, easyjet has some pretty good deals and i am not sure what the train would cost. Have you travelled this route before? What is your opinion/suggestion?

Re: Basel to Düsseldorf: Fly or Train?

I've not been as far as Düsseldorf, but have been to Heidelberg on the train and it was a very comfortable experience. Consider you have to get to the airport at least an hour before departure, you have the hassle of luggage restrictions and then have to get into Düsseldorf itself once you get there, I would opt for the train that will bring you straight into Düsseldorf centre.

Go by train (via Koblenz, not via Frankfurt), enjoy the views on the Rhine valley.

Re: Basel to Düsseldorf: Fly or Train?

It's a nice trainride but make sure to book in advance to get a good deal (Sparpreis). A regular return ticket would be around 240 Euro (without a 'Bahncard').

The airport in DD is not too far from the city centre and well connected.

Re: Basel to Düsseldorf: Fly or Train?

I need to go end of September but all sights online say i cannot book that far in advance. I do not want to wait too long and have the flight price sky rocket (currently 70chf) only to find out the 'more convenient' train is 200+ euros, as suggested above. How early can i get a train ticket? Is it possible to get it now for end of September?

You can get the train ticket about 3 months in advance.

That's right - DBahn has some good prices if booked early ( EUR29 one way from eg Konstanz / Basel Bad Bhf to Aarhus DK for example ).

Flights are cheaper when on offer, like from Swiss if one can't wait that long.

Re: Basel to Düsseldorf: Fly or Train?

Swiss doesnt have cheap flights to Duüsseldorf, but easyjet does. Its a gamble i guess, get the cheap flight now or wait and hop for a cheap train.

Re: Basel to Düsseldorf: Fly or Train?

I think, better book now easyjet, then book the overcrowded ICE (in the second class, esp, the leg from Mannheim to Cologne: fast track only 1,5 Hours) on the weekends.
Or treat yourself with the first class( from 59 Euros one way)
