Need help to visit Zurich in August

Hi:

My husband and I will be spending a couple of days in Zurich, staying at the Renaissance Zurich Hotel (Thurgauerstrasse 101, Zurich-Glattpark) on Aug 20-22. This is our first trip to Switzerland. We'd like to visit the following places on Sunday, Aug. 21:

- St Peter Kirche
- Grossmunster
- The Fraumunster Abbey
- Augustinergasse
- Wasserkirche

What is the best way to do this? Since we have no knowledge of the city we would like to ask for very detailed info on how to take a tram/bus from our hotel to a central location in Zurich where we can go on foot to visit the above places.
- What bus number or tram to take from the hotel?
- Purchase a one-day (24-hr) ticket for what zone(s)?
- How often does this bus/tram run on Sunday in August?
- Any suggestion on the best way or sequence to visit the above sites on foot?
- Is there a Catholic Church near the hotel (Sat evening Or Sunday morning Mass)? If there's one, how to get there from the hotel?

I appreciate any help anyone can give me. Thank you very much!

Sincerely,
Vic_ho_24

See here for all info on public transport in Zurich. I'd guess you'll be taking tram 10, which is the only one I know from that area that goes to the city center. Schedules, zone info, etc. are all in the website. Edit: you can also take tram 11.

All those sites are so close to each other, that you can visit them in any order you want, especially if you have a whole day.

You might find it useful to invest in the Zurich Card.

Pretty much close to each other - some by walking, most by trams, even on a Sunday in August - public transport runs like clock work, some even say you can set your watch by it. Trams usually every 7 - 15 minutes depending on the lines. Read more here.

Catholic Church in EN: http://www.englishmission.ch/
To get there ( Neptunstrasse 60 8032 Zurich ) on Sun 21.08 by 11.15am, click on their page here. A sample screenshot has been enclosed. From any point to any point of interest, you can use http://www.sbb.ch/en/home.html to find directions and timings - very handy tool.

Good luck and welcome to the forum, and soon to CH.

Re: Need help to visit Zurich in August

Thank you, Motorschweitz & jrspet, for responding so quickly and spending the time to give me such detailed information. We are really excited and looking forward to visit your country and make friends with such helpful people like you.

After going thru' the links and the bus schedule you kindly made for me, I think things are finally clicking in my head and I have arrived to the following outlines for our excursion. Please bear with me on the wordy details as I always like to repeat what I was told to ensure that there's no misunderstanding. And please comment on anything (esp. distance in walking like across the bridge) if it sounds too ridiculous.

- From hotel, walk to tram stop to catch Tram 11
- Purchase 24-hr pass for 2 zones (since the hotel is located in Zone 21 & the city centre is 10--assuming the church is also in Zone 10)
- Get off at Kreuzplatz
- Walk to church located at Neptunstrasse 60
- From the church, take Tram 15 to Grossmunster
- Then WALK to Wasserkirche, WALK across the Monsterbrucke bridge, visit Fraumunster & St. Peters-Kirche
- Then take Tram 11 back to the hotel

I assume the 24-hr pass for 2 zones will cover all the tram rides mentioned above?

jrspet, I like your suggestion of the Zurich Card that includes all the museums. I'll definitely look into it. Thank you.

I'd recommend walking from St. Peters up the Lindenhof hill too, you get a great view overlooking the Limmat and the buildings on the other side (Grossmuenster, Wasserkirche, ETH, Uni Zuerich), it's a good photo op. It's not a far walk to Bahnhofstrasse from there, where you can catch tram 11.
