Exhibition Cheese Dairies St Gallen Area

Hi all,

My wife and I are heading up to St. Gallen for the long weekend in a few days. Considering we will be in the Apenzell region we thought we might do a cheesy activitiy and visit an exhibition dairy. Found the Appenzell exhibition dairy site at Stein am Rhein, but discovered that the cost for a 1 hour guided tour is 90chf per person!

Has anyone ever done this sort of thing? Are these tours even close to being value for money? Are there any other options for cheese making or visiting a dairy around those parts that is worth a look and reasonably well priced?

Thanks in advance.

Cheers,

Firstly, are you sure about the Stein am Rhein? That's not in Appenzell, however Stein AR is! (Ausserrhoden is one half of the canton of Appenzell)

I'll check out the prices and see if I can find more details. I've been to a cheese-making do on the Flumserberge which was very interesting and we sure didn't pay Fr.90.- each - maybe it depends on the number in the group.

Later added:
Der Eintritt in die Appenzeller Schaukäserei ist kostenlos! - Looks to me as if looking round the Exhibition is free.

Geführter Besichtigung
Wann: täglich, Voranmeldung erwünscht
Kosten: CHF 90.00 (bis 50 Personen)
Dauer: 1 Stunde
(guided tour - book in advance - Fr.90.- (up to 50 people) 1 hour.

Tasting Appenzeller Cheese - 30 Minutes Fr.8.-
Tour Fr.90.- up to fifty people - which isn't quite the same thing!

There is a small cheese dairy at the foot of the Säntis cable car that you can walk round freely. I don't know if they arrange tours though

Re: Exhibition Cheese Dairies St Gallen Area

O.k, so some easy progress has been made through proper German translation and local geographic knowledge!

Not that I had actually looked it up on a map to check locations, I had made a leap from Stein AR to Stein am Rhein, i'm happy to learn Stein AR is much closer to our accom. than shauffhassen!

So you are suggesting Longbyt the exhibition itself is free, or a small cheese tasting for 8chf but the guided tour is in fact 90chf, but perhaps on on a group basis? We could perhaps tolerate the free exhibit and small cheese tasting, especially if its close enough.

We will naturally be taking the cable car to Santis so will definately check out the dairy there, thanks for the tip deep purple.

Re: Exhibition Cheese Dairies St Gallen Area

There is also the large Appenzeller cheese shop in the centre of Appenzell town itself.

Re: Exhibition Cheese Dairies St Gallen Area

O.k so visited all the places mentioned:

Appenzeller cheese shop in Appenzell is a place where you can taste and buy cheese, but its by no means anything special, and I would classify it as mostly a tourist attraction - it had more souviner's than cheese or cheese related info

Appenzeller showcase dairy has a bit more to offer with basic information about the process and a big viewing area over the top of the factory floor where they churn the milk and put it into molds etc. This part is all totally free, not sure about guided tours and prices. Also has a reasonable fromagerie and restaurant/cafe area, and we enjoyed sitting outside in the sun with a tasting plate for and hour or so. Semi-interesting and pleasant enough, but won't take up more than an hour of your time and perhaps not worth a special trip.

Santis exhibition dairy, exactly the same as the Appenzeller dairy but smaller and with a more rural style. Again, have a look if you are at Santis, but don't go just for the dairy.

Hoping to find better examples around Gruyere...

Moléson Village, near Gruyères, Canton Fribourg.

This one is nearer you, and only costs Fr 5,-- per adult!!

Afterwards enjoy a cheese fondue outside on the terrace, watching the mountains, wonderful!

Thanks for providing feedback. It is always good to get opinions after people have visited places. That is worth more than just the factual information about the places.

Glad to see the Engelberg Kloster cheese factory getting a mention. The only one I've been to, and TBH I'm not likely to try any others, due to the smell, which turns my stomach.

Anyway, at this one you can watch the cheesemaking progress as it happens, done on a very small scale, so no 'tour' and no cost involved, unless you want to buy cheese or anything else from the shop.

I'd not think it worth a trip in itself, but together with the rest of the town and the monastery itself it makes a good day out.
