Can anyone recommend any cheap hotel in or near Geneva? Somewhere like Annemasse or Nyon would also be ok

there's the Ibis hotel, 10, rue Voltaire (it's not far from the train station)

edit : it's perhaps a bit more expensive than when my friend came as it's summer....

Right in the centre of town just off Rue du Rhone is a hotel run by the Salvation Army.
I was booked a room there once and it was fantastic, and really reasonable. If you are interested let me know and I will dig out the information

The Hotel de France in Ferney Voltaire is handy for the airport, if that's what you're after.
Single rooms start at 69 Euros, doubles at 89.

it is not especially for the airport. a friend is coming for a few days and he will hire a car so anywhere within 30 minutes drive of Geneva is good

I stayed at the Hôtel St-Gervais in 2008, cheap and very central.
