Avoid Binn = rip-off!

We had a rather nasty experience last Monday whilst on holiday in the Binntal [VS, CH]. Having previously printed out bus tickets on the internet at CHF4.60 each, when boarding the bus, the driver [who stank of smoke BTW] demanded an extra CHF6.00 per person for "Kurtax". We showed him the pre-printed tickets. Nothing we could say or do would persuade him from charging us the extra for a short distance [up to Brunnebuehl = probably less than 5kms] where there was absolutely nothing except an elongated cowshed and mobile milking parlour. Very, very disappointed. We have written to the Gemeinde Binn but guess what? They are on holiday for two weeks. Wonder whether they will deign to reply after their return to work?

That's really weird ...

Usually this tax (I assume, it's a "Tourist tax") is payed for your accommodation and not for your transportation.
never heard of anything like this before.

Did you get e receipt for this extra amount ?

Most definitely! Two tickets printed out by the bus driver.

Re: Avoid Binn = rip-off!

I just checked on the SBB website. The fare from Binn to Brunnebiel is 4.60, plus a supplement and mandatory reservation. The site doesn't say how much the supplement is, just that you should ask at your local station - but I guess this is what you paid.

Maybe it's a private road or something - the "normal" road up the Binntal stops at Fäld, and Brunnebiel is 20 minutes beyond there by bus.

What's the driver smelling of smoke have to do with your additional charge? Last I heard, it wasn't illegal to smoke in Switzerland.

Based on a quick look at Mapplus I'd agree - the official road ends in Faeld - from there Binntaalstrasse does continue along the valley. My guess (purely guess) it is that the road is owned by the Swiss Parks - and they charge a fee per person.

Re: Avoid Binn = rip-off!

As far as I can remember from having walked up it a few years ago (from Fäld to the pass beyond the Binntalhütte), it isn't even a proper surfaced road - more of a gravelly farm track.

Re: Avoid Binn = rip-off!

I understand you might be acting on principle , but I would go through absolutely no hassle, writing emails etc etc for 6 chf (which is on top of that mentioned on the site...) as for smelling like smoke, I think the bus is big enough to go sit away from him/her.

otherwise I hope you had a good trip there

Re: Avoid Binn = rip-off!

No.... it was one of the small buses.
And additionally, we poor folks who do not live in CH now have to watch every penny as the Euro has dropped rather substantially. Added to which
we are retired and have a meagre Euro pension.

Fair enough, but you were not ripped off. You were charged a supplement that is mentioned on the SBB website (and, I am prepared to guess, also on the CarPostal website and on the timetable pinned up at the bus stop).

Re: Avoid Binn = rip-off!

Maybe we could change the title of this thread now. How about changing the ! to a ? as it seems this extra fee was in fact a published supplement and not a rip off.

I was thinking the same thing. I don't think it impairs his ability to know how much the fare is or drive the bus, even if it is a short one.

Re: Avoid Binn = rip-off!

Is this Kurtax also applicable to locals ?
How do they decide who they should be charging for ?

Re: Avoid Binn = rip-off!

If it's anything like a village off the beaten track which we once lived in, the drivers of the buses knew us - we lived there, we paid our taxes there and were thus 'Einheimische' (local) and got a deduction in the fares on the local bus. The driver once joked that with our half-price cards, our children's cards (which were, at that time, free) and our 'Einheimische' deduction, he would soon have to be paying US to do the journey!
