Parents coming - need idea for day trip

Hi all - my folks are coming for a weekend in August, for 3 days. It is there 1st time to Switzerland. I definitely want to show them Zurich and around where we live (Meilen) and around the lake to Rapperswil etc.

But I'd also like to show them the more remote / country / beautiful Switzerland, which is just breathtaking. Now before any of you react, I'm not saying Zurich isn't I just mean the sort of postcard, mountain village sort of places that to an Irish person, is Switzerland.

1) We'll probably only have a daytrip, and be on the train
2) So looking for somewhere about an hour / 1.5 hours max from the city. Folks ain't too young either so don't like too much travelling

Were thinking of somewhere like Einsiedeln. Why? Well it's the only place we've seen

Any suggestions for places you've brought people to, that just took their breath away?

Thanks
Graham

Re: Parents coming - need idea for day trip

I think Rigi is a good compromise between easily accessible (by train and easy walking route if you wanted to take them for a little hike) and beautiful views.

Re: Parents coming - need idea for day trip

Bernese Oberland is always impressive...Wengen, Murren, Grindelwald etc....but an hour or so longer than your journey time. Its the full "mountains, cuckoo clock, alpine meadow" deal though

If you can bear an extra hour on the train - PM me and i can give you some tips

Re: Parents coming - need idea for day trip

I took my parents to the Rhine Falls near Schaffhausen and they loved it.

Train from Zurich to Schaffhausen (less than an hour I think), walk down the river to the falls (90 minutes or so), visit the falls and get the train back from Schloss Laufen. We did this as a full day trip from Neuchâtel, it would be a shortish day out from Zurich.

Thanks all - keep the tips coming, very much appreciated. Folks are old enough, and not that mobile. So anything above light walking is probably a no-no

Rigi is great in good weather, and SBB have a discounted "Railaway" offer. The "classic" way to do this is train to Arth-Goldau, cogwheel train up to the top, easy walking / coffee / lunch, cogwheel train to Kaltbad, short walk, cable car to Weggis, boat to Lucerne (in nice weather, sit on the top deck outside - you'll have to pay a 1st class supplement but it's well worth it), train home.
(Why this way around and not the other [boat first]? because the sun is on the eastern flank of Mt Rigi in the morning, and on the western (lakeside) flank in the afternoon.)

Re: Parents coming - need idea for day trip

Hi- great to hear you want to make your parents' visit extra special. It would help to know a bit more about them. Are they elderly, frail, have difficulty walking, or active, fit, etc. Are they the type who love Museums, nature, flowers, wildlife, walking, towns?

Re: Parents coming - need idea for day trip

Hi well my parents + aunt + uncle are coming. Ages range from 63 - 75. None of them are frail, but guess not the outdoors / hiking type. Think would be more into scenery / quaint towns than museums etc.

I suppose in my limited Zurich knowledge, would be happier having lunch in Rapperswil for example, instead of in a museum in the city. My guess is things like boat trips / leisurely walks / quaint towns / scenery etc is probably the way forward.

Hope that helps!
Graham

Re: Parents coming - need idea for day trip

Just to add that if you go to Rigi, do not travel via Zurich HB - you'll be in with the morning/afternoon rush hour crowd. Get the S7 to Rapperswil, there's a direct train to Arth-Goldau (and back from Lucerne) from there. Takes about 2:20 hours from Meilen to the top of Rigi.

Re: Parents coming - need idea for day trip

My parents also come soon. I bought Gemeinde Tageskarten, and we take a tour with the Bernina Express.
Then we drive to Brigels one day, and they want to spend a day in Downtown Zürich too.
Otherwise I would suggest a trip to Luzern. beautyful inner city, especially with the 2 wooden bridges

Hi,
We liked Rigi, which is a great option combined with Lake Luzern. If you are driving, we also liked Brunnen which is stunning..Burgenstock is another nice place , also offers some hiking routes.
Enjoy.

Zug is a nice place by the lake and has a nice little old town, quite nice for older people.

I had mine for 3 weeks. Bought the 8 day Swiss pass and did most of the "tourist" attractions of CH (Titlis, Matterhorn, Jungfrau and etc.).

Re: Parents coming - need idea for day trip

A bit ambitious perhaps, but maybe a trip on the Wilhelm Tell express (panoramic carriages through the alps) down to Locarno or Lugano, overnight in a hotel overlooking the lake (Maggiore or Lugano) and back the next day.

Cheers,
Nick

Re: Parents coming - need idea for day trip

A suggestion for a round trip. The trains have an hourly service, so you could stop at any place for an hour, or multiples.
You need to buy the one day travel ticket from your Meilen Gemeinde, about SFr 35 each person. You can reserve seats 5 days
ahead from any SBB station ticket office, for a SFr 5.00 charge for each train. Probably best for the first 2 trains.

(The ship from Interlaken to Brienz leaves at 11:10 or 13:10 or 14:45 or 16:25 so that would need to be carefully integrated)

Zurich leaves 08:32 train to Bern (Arrive 09:28
Berne leaves 10:04 train to Interlaken Ost, sit on left side (Arrive 10:57
Interlaken Ost 11:10 ship to Brienz (Arrive 12:31

50 minute picnic by the lake at Brienz

Brienz 13:24 to Luzern, sit on right side (Arrive 15:04
(Here you could spend some time in Luzern old town)
Luzern 15:10 to Zurich (Arrive 15:56

Interlaken city itself is a little too touristy and pricey. If possible, try to stay at places like Murren or Wengen.
I paid around CHF250/room for a not so good hotel in Interlaken-West.
