Re: Swiss National Day - what do you like to do?

Throwing a foreigner into a lake on August 01 is "de rigueur" these days, especially if they earn more than CHF 250K and have bitched about it on EF.

[QUOTE=adrianlondon;1279645]On Sunday (i.e. the night before national day) will be by the river in Basel to see the fireworks.

Do you know what time they start and where is the best vantage point?

23:15 - by Mittlebrucke on the river bank (upstream or downstream, as they let off identical displays both sides of the bridge I think).

Re: Swiss National Day - what do you like to do?

Alas, while I planned to sleep in, I'm going to have to drag my ass out of bed early, so I can make fresh tortillas and all the other stuff I didn't make today because my daughter wanted a motorcycle ride in the Alps, and even then, we didn't get to Attinghausen for "Poulet im Koerbli" due to all the $*^$ tourists blocking the road at Andermatt!

Being that we are graced with a 3-day weekend for the national holiday this year, anyone have suggestions for first-timers? Particularly interested in something unique and/or traditional though we are open to any ideas.

We are based near Nyon but are looking to hopefully combine it with a nice long weekend trip, the itinerary for which will be largely determined by the weather.

Best fireworks?
Best food?
Best atmosphere?
Least tourists?

Very interested to hear your comments!

I see that you are in Vaud. I enjoy Aug 1st in Villars-sur-Ollon. It is fun and very popular with locals and tourists alike.

Go to Betten, near Fiesch, and take the gondola up to Bettmerhorn. Hike this trail

http://www.myswitzerland.com/en/sugg...ier-trail.html

It's a pretty family friendly trail (that said, it's a busy trail full of families who enjoy yelling back and forth at each other in some form of German ) Someone had even hauled their baby out there. Don't let the lack of people in the photos fool you.

Re: Swiss National Day - what do you like to do?

I felt sure that last year I watched the Swiss version of the red devils do a fly pass over Zurich...but perhaps that was on a different day? Anyone know?
Do the festivities that are happening in the day in Zurich translate into something in the evening too?

Merci and happy National Day

That was probably the Züri Fäscht.

It takes place every three years: the next one should be in 2013.

Swiss National Day - what do you like to do?

I like to remind my French friends that it's also the anniversary of the Battle of the Nile.

I have just been told by a local that there won't be any fireworks in Zürich (and that last time was a few years ago)?
