Winter trip help? (Dec-Jan)

Hello all!

I am a young kiwi who is half swiss and grown up in New Zealand hearing all about Switzerland!

After my last visit 10 years ago (when I was only 11!) I have decided that I want/NEED to return! I work full time and can only get 3 and a bit weeks in CH! I will be travelling alone and plan to live with family and friends around Appenzell. It will be in winter and, at this stage, around January.

I was hoping to hear some tips and "must see" locations around Switzerland in winter. I love being half Swiss and am very proud of it but I know nothing of my own country! So please! I need some suggestions of what I need to see and what I should do in my short 3 weeks!

I like the idea of an alpine train trip... any "must do's" or recommendations for the best train trip during winter? I love the idea of seeing beautiful landscapes and being with nature. (Mountains, lakes, walks etc) so if you have any tips where I can do that, I would love to hear it! I love the outdoors!

Being around Appenzell, I am already planning on visting Säntis. Will that be ok to visit around winter? or will it be a bit inaccessible? I am used to horrible winds and hard rain in NZ winter! haha.

Sorry for all the questions!!

Thank you!!!

No time for long message, going out in a mo. A very nice train trip in winter is from Chur to the ski resort of Arosa.

Are you a skier or snowboarder? Arosa is a nice resort. One of my best memories there is a tandem parascending flight from the top- it was amazing and not too expensive.

Säntis is worth visiting in winter but you will not be able to go far at the summit.

I agree that a trip up to Arosa is worthwhile. The best train trip is probably the Bernina Express, also from Chur.

When I travelled on the Bernina Express I used my Swiss Pass. You need to pay a surcharge for a seat booking in the Panorama car. The first time, I booked it through the Switzerland Travel Centre. The second time was at Chur station. Booking early is the best advice I can give.

The best seats are the ones at the end of the Panorama coach, opposite the luggage area. This means you can easily see out of the windows both sides.

Yay!

Awesome! Thank you all so much for your help!
I am really excited!

I do a little bit of snowboarding but am pretty terrible and had a bit of a bad experience last time I went but I would definatly give it another go if I go there!

What else is there to do in winter that you would recommend? I only have 3 and a bit weeks but I want to make the MOST of it!

Sorry for the double post! Didnt know how to edit!

Just wanted to mention I love the idea of cafe's at the top of mountains and in obscure places that are only accessible by walking or gondola/lift etc. Can anyone recommend me some nice places like that? Somewhere with an awesome view or location and a killer hot chocolate! haha. I dont mind having to walk there if I have to!

Any around Appenzell? If not, I dont mind! I am going to have a rail pass anyway

As well as Säntis you may also wish to visit Ebenalp. It is a little lower and has less facilities. There is a nice, more traditional, mountain cafe there. Take the train from Appenzell to Wasserauen.
