perseid meteor shower

i am not sure if this would be the correct forum to put it, but a heads up for the street parade night, if you wanna rest a bit from the day time 'shuffling' and watch the skies:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perseids

august 13 night will be the peak for perseids meteor shower, and hopefully the skies would be clear. (well, the full moon will make it less visible, though)

A symphony of shooting stars..
Climbed to the top of the Moléson in Fribourg today and waited for the light orchestra.

It was beautiful
Poetry

A few astronomers presented the constellations and galaxy. Their excited enthusiasm was so contagious.

If you can, do mark your agenda for next year's Perseid.
If you do not wish to hike, there's a télécabine service from the village of Moléson (Gruyčre).

it seems 'geminids' weren't posted here, but quadrantids' meteor shower peak is tonight, if one can find a patch to the open skies...

Re: perseid meteor shower

Would like to know when and where you guys plan to watch it. I guess the sky's not clear today.

I've been thinking of places like Rigiblick, Hönggerberg, and Üetliberg but not really sure if any of them offers a wide range of view and a low-lighting condition.

Suggestions?

Re: perseid meteor shower

Hi,

I am looking for locations to watch / photograph too. So far I found this website that gives you the best times to watch the skies but has no information about location.

http://www.spacedex.com/perseids/loc...witzerland.php

Does someone know of any good spots around Zurich?

The webpage recommends Aug 11-12. Will you also look out for them today or tomorrow? The sky's going to be clear tomorrow and partly clear at around midnight today.

Am hoping that baby (due today!) arrives over next couple of days as we'd have a great view from the Wochenbett area of the Unispital Obviously it would be great if she arrived anyway, but this would be extra cool

The sky is crystal clear right now and did you know you can listen for meteors? Observatory out of Texas with short intro on what you're listening for - good for about 10 minutes and then it's just white noise and lulls you to sleep....

Re: perseid meteor shower

I was near Lake Zurich (near the Chinese garden) about an hour ago, but I could not see any meteor shower. In fact, the North-Eastern sky had barely any stars visible, maybe because of the city lights.

Which place in Zurich did you observe them from? I would like to try again tomorrow and the day after.

Re: perseid meteor shower

I'll probably give it a try tonight, the conditions seem ideal.

I will try Uetliberg. Not sure how that will turn out ... on the one hand, it should be a great vantage point to the northeast. But it's also staring right back into the city lights, so I'm wondering how much of a problem it will be from up there.

On the plus side, thanks to Street Parade I imagine, S trains are running all night up there, or at least til 3:30, so if it turns out to be a good show, no need to worry about catching that last train.

Please let us know how it goes. Would like to try Uetliberg tomorrow evening. Can't go today.

Re: perseid meteor shower

Looking forward to the meteor-gazing experience!

We are considering Uetliberg or Albispass based on others' recommendations, but not very familiar with the area itself - so I don't know if there is a patch of land at that altitude to sit with our blankets and have a clear view of the northeast horizon looking past Zurich city lights!

I tried to scout for places that are already northeast of Zurich to hang out waiting for the shower, but didn't come across any like Uetliberg/Albispass.

I would like to know if our friends in the earlier posts found a good spot at Uetliberg on Saturday night, and how it turned out.

In a word: not very good (ok, in three words).

First, forget about the top of Uetliberg. I did not quite realize how much light is up there. The whole path from the station to the hotel is lit, the whole terrace up there is lit, they even had fireworks No good.

Walk away a little and it gets better. I went down towards the city, I suppose one could also walk south along the ridge and find darker spots. I found a place relatively isolated and with a clear view. But by then clouds had rolled in. Just a few of them, but they catch and reflect city lights so well, it makes the whole sky way too bright.

See here for example.

And that's just for a relatively short exposure time, any longer and the picture is covered with clouds. There's no meteor in there, but there are planes. Those are also annoying. It's probably better to go later when air traffic has slowed down.

Bottom line, Uetliberg may work but (1) walk away from the top, and (2) hope for perfectly clear conditions. Even so, I did manage to see a few meteors. A handful of bright shooting stars, and once my eyes were really accustomed to the dark (and this takes a while, not just a minute, but a good 15 minutes or so), fainter ones as well. I wished upon them for the clouds to go away, but it never worked

Good luck to those who go hunting tonight.
