help with travel costs - Funeral?

Hi,
I just had some really bad news, my grand mother just passed away. I need to go to sweden for the funeral this Thursday, does any one know if I can get some help to pay the the flight to sweden? Its really expansive with such short notice... But does any one know if I can get any kind discount from the flight company?

Im in a bit of shock at the moment so this is may be a quite harsch question...

Re: help with travel costs - Funeral?

Sorry to hear....

We flew recently to Göteborg, and the cheapest options we found were KLM via Amsterdam or Air Berlin via Hamburg I think...direct options were swiss (very expensive), possibly scandinavian and city airlines.

Last minute airfares are always a challenge. You could also try just turning up at the airport and seeing what they can do for you on 'standby'...

It could be theoretically useful to see if you can book the tickets from the Swedish end - in Swedish Kronor - the currency definitely has dropped against the CHF in the past 6 months...

Re: help with travel costs - Funeral?

Sorry to hear of your Grandmother's passing, my condolences.

Airlines have what is called a "Bereavement fare", they usually require you send in supporting documents like a Death certificate. Sometimes however, the regular fare can be cheaper than the "Bereavement fare".

Good luck.

Re: help with travel costs - Funeral?

Thanks for the help and the condolences. After some thinking I assume the best way is to call my company's booking agency and hopefully they can help me...

Re: help with travel costs - Funeral?

Sorry for your loss. It's always so hard to come to terms with.

When my brother died very suddenly in the middle of the summer holidays Flights were fully booked but one of the travel agents, when I explained, said he'd ring around for me if I liked. He found me a flight and I was able to pick up the ticket at the airport. I've never forgotten his kindness (this was in 1989). Maybe someone can do the same for you.

Thinking of you.

Re: help with travel costs - Funeral?

Well there's always RyanAir!

I've used it once, as they don't really fly to Stockholm but rather to Nykoping, and I actually needed to go to Nykoping!

And Bergamo is only 30 minutes more than the other Milanese airports (Linate, Malpensa), so it was worth it.

Re: help with travel costs - Funeral?

Sorry to hear your sad news. Such times are never easy...

Assuming your company booking agency is closed until Monday, I'd start acting on the good suggestions already put forward to you on this thread and get in touch with the airlines / rail company soonest.

Also, what about asking for assistance from your employers / HR division? Maybe they can give you a salary advance to pay for your travel and deduct it in stages?

Can your family and friends in Sweden help at all? Perhaps someone could book the flight for you from there instead?

Hope it all works out whatever you choose to do.

From Luzern, you can get a direct train to Milano. Then from Milano, I think there are shuttle buses.

Re: help with travel costs - Funeral?

If you are up for the long 22hr train ride from Schaffhausen to Göteborg Central one way 2nd class, it is EUR119 and seats are still available.
