What's happening this weekend?

As it's about to be a 3-day weekend in many cantons, I was wondering if there are any noteworthy events going on around the country? The weather doesn't look particularly appealing anywhere, which excludes our typical activity of hiking or camping. Instead, I wanted to find a good event of some sort that could be combined with a city tour or something of the like.

Grateful for any suggestions!

I think you might have to start a function. I am going to Moléson with a strong umbrella!

Re: What's happening this weekend?

Well Monday is a holiday in Neuchatel and I thought it was all Switzerland but obviously not.

It's called the Jeûne Federale whatever that means. I think it's something to do with fasting.

Re: What's happening this weekend?

But if anyone knows anything that is open and good to do on Sunday in the bad weather (on the Zurich side) I would love to hear about it.

Davos is having a country music festival. But that might be outside.

Re: What's happening this weekend?

If the sights and sounds of magnificent flying machines is your cup of tea ..and if you can make it out to Sion on Friday- the Breitling Airshow is a winner. However, it seems pointless travelling there on Saturday and Sunday because of the cloud and expected rain.

Yes, it's an odd one. The "fédéral" bit in the name suggests that it should be a national bank holiday, but lots of cantons (including BE and GE at least) don't have it.

It's normally a good one for a long weekend in the Bernese Oberland, as with all the Berner working on Monday the huts and hotels don't get as crowded as on some other holiday weekends. Pity about the weather forecast this year.

The Greifenseelauf is on - I suspect quite a few EFers will be out in lycra pounding round the 21.1km course.

Re: What's happening this weekend?

In short, the Jeune fédéral was instituted in 1832 as a day of fasting for all CH. In Romandie, only Vaud and Neuchatel, and part of the Bernese Jura have a day off on the Monday. Tradition is that everybody eats plum tart- and money saved by not eating meat, fish, etc, given to charity. In those days, people in rural Switzerland (eg the great majority) would have a glut of plums = cost nothing, and they would make their own pastry with cheap farm butter. Takes place on 3rd week-end in September, although Geneva's Jeune is the Thursday after the first week-end.

There is a huge brocante/antique's fair in Le Landeron, between Neuchatel and Bienne, if you don't fancy the Fete de Vendanges.
Typical though - after weeks of excellent weather, just the mention of visitor = massive drop in temperature and rain, duh!

Good luck pal. You'll cruise this all the way, even sans slippers. Let the Vibrams whisk you to a successful race.
