Since this weekend is supposed to be rainy i wonder if anyone has any suggestions for a train journey that will still be lovely? Surely not everything in this beautiful country is spoiled by rain?!? I would be travelling from Basel so would have to be reasonably close, under 3 hours each way, preferably closer to 2.

What do you do on rainy weekends?

Basel Bad - Freiburg - Titsee-Neustadt - Seebrugg and back.
That is admittedly in Germany. So alternatively, it'll be Basel - Lucerne - Brunigpass - Interlaken - Berne - Basel.

Most other scenic Swiss railways are too far south for your 3hr limit, or take into the fog if the weather is bad (Rigi, Pilatus).

We have once been to Interlaken from Basel when it was raining..It was a beautiful sight esp near Lake Brianz , Lake Thun etc.Get down at one of these stations randomly and trust me you will never see something more serene than this view.

My kids will get remembered how it is to walk a dog in the rain and then decide if they are still on board and I'll will get to iron. If I can get some nice meat in Germany tomorrow I will also make goulash in my new slow cooker and hopefully try out the heating in this house. I will also make my long long shopping list of things to buy for when I will be on my "Mom's week off" trip to the US next week....
