Christmas Markets - when do they start?

Hi,
I have been searching the internet for various dates when the Christmas markets start in 2011!
My parents are visiting from 16th - 19th November and my mum has expressed an interest to visit a Christmas market - however, they all seem to start the week after
Does anyone know of one that is on around this time?
Huge thanks

Re: Christmas Markets - when do they start?

Sorry to disapoint, but most of them will probably start around the 1st Advent weekend (November 26/27) and go on 4 weeks until Christmas

No disappointment - this is what I thought but I thought it was worth an ask just in case!

Re: Christmas Markets - when do they start?

There's a Christmas market on the 19th (and 20th) in Seegräben (Juckerfarm). I know this because I will have a stand there
It's a beautiful area and when the weather is good, the views are great. They'll have camel rides (maybe not what you're looking for!), and candle-making and there's a really nice little shop with specialty foods and a restaurant (simple, but with yummy food) as well as lots of stands.

This is the earliest market that I know about.

Re: Christmas Markets - when do they start?

Some of the smaller Christmas markets start in the smaller (and very pretty) villages of the Alsace already on the weekend of the 19th (is that too late?)
Check this website:
http://noel.tourisme-alsace.com/en/christmas-markets
and do a search on your dates
[And if there's no Christmas Market you can still buy some gorgeous Alsace pottery, glasses and wine ]

the one in Zürich HB apparently starts on 22nd NOV, so that if your mum can stay a few days longer, the matter is solved

We had the same issue last year. The answer was Innsbruck. Theirs opens the 15th. We made a weekend out of it with my parents. We even skiied on the glacier 30 min away. Parents loved it.

She will have been here, for an exceptionally long time, already.

A list of the 2013 Christmas markets in Switzerland:

http://www.brunnvalla.ch/weihnachtsmaerkte/schweiz.html

It's quite a comprehensive list that shows many smaller markets too including Stans and Glarus.

For those willing to travel just about 3 hours by car, I would warmly recommend the Stuttgart Christmas Market

Re: Christmas Markets - when do they start?

Wintertraum is already open (since 9th of November), and besides skating you can eat, drink and have a wonderful time in a nice and friendly athmosphere. They also have good music there.

Get yourself to a proper Christmas market in Einsiedeln. Outside, in the fresh air, above the clouds. Recommended!

Re: Christmas Markets - when do they start?

Visited our first market yesterday - in Innsbruck. It was wonderful!

We left around 8 am and arrived at noon. Headed straight for the market (taking photos along the way) and warmed up with some glühwein and bratwurst. Walked all around the stalls and shops in the area. Found a vendor selling glühbier - it was quite tasty also!

We also had time to visit the Tiroler Volkskunstmuseum and Hofkirche. Beautiful stuff and the church is amazing. Home by 10 pm. It was a wonderful start to the Christmas season for me - I have about 14 more on my list!
