Could anyone recommend some places interesting to see in Austria at the week-ends so that I can drive from Zurich?Do I need a special permission for auto road?

You need to buy a vignette for the highway and also make sure you are carrying an orange "high-vis" jacket for each person in the car in case you break down. You can buy them at the first petrol-station/services over the border.

Highway 'Vignette' for Austria

My husband and I often take visitors first to Vaduz, Lichtenstein, and then on to Feldkirch, Austria.
In Lichtenstein no vignette is necessary, since the autobahn does not officially belong to them. Once you leave Vaduz to go on to Feldkirch, you use normal roads and not a highway. It is only about 15-20 minutes away. So no need to purchase the Austrian vignette if you drive that route.

If you plan to go further into Austria, you can pick up a vignette at any gas station.

if it is specifically 'driving trip', you might wanna avoid high-ways, too, as Austria offers a nice mountain pass: Timmelsjoch

well, it might be closed in winter, though.. and you have to pay to pass it but good view and road. then again, CH has enough nice mountain passes, which will serve you well for weekend trips.

Defenately go to Salzburg! It is a beautifuly little city and not SO far from Zurich. Also try Innsbruck! It has a cute little old downtown and if you are into Swarovski you can visit the "Swarovski Kristall welten" http://kristallwelten.swarovski.com/...e/homepage.php

Bregenz is also cute with the lake next to it :-)

You don't give us any details of the type of things you like to do, so that would help. Agree 100% with Salzburg, which is def. reachable for a weekend and would make a great place to spend one or two nights. If you get away early enough on Friday you can reach Salzburg (assuming no snow and using the Arlberg tunnel) in five hours, which would allow you to get in for a late dinner and then an evening wandering the streets of the Altstadt.

If you had a long weekend, Vienna is the obvious destination, but more of a flight than a drive. The stretch from Salzburg to Wien is long, straight and boring. That said, if you are wine lovers &/or foodies, the Wachau and the other wine regions around Vienna offer some of the best of those wine/food thingies in all of Europe.

If you are skiers / hikers, then Arlberg is a great place to spend a weekend and offers something for almost every budget (Montafon is pretty easy on the wallet, St. Anton a great mid-range place if you are into both ski and apres ski, and Lech/Zuers can break most people's monthly budgets over a champagne-filled weekend).

There's a lot more on the list: St. Johann in Tirol for family skiing, Kitzbuhel for a taste of the Munich "schikeria", Burgenland, Neusiedlersee, the Donau, etc. etc. Personally, I'd give Innsbruck a miss.
