For further rating purposes I would give Swiss an 8, BA 7, Air Canada 6-7, United a 5 and Delta a 4-5.

Hope this helps, United Airways would definitely be the worst trans atlantic carrier I have tried.

OK, I'll add my 2 cents worth here.

I say I won't fly an airline again - bad service. Had one of those on USAirways, I think from FRA - PHL. Just overall bad in the case that something went wrong in heating up their meals and everything got fried and the cheddar cheese they offered to go with the bread was melted inside its little individually wrapped plastic...salad was also beyond hope.

But, that was one case, and as we are now a troop of 5 traveling, I will most likely allow the price to dictate! The best days were when we would fly FRA/JFK and Singapore always had the cheapest flights. Now that is the best of both worlds.

I would rank United above USAirways - although I haven't flown with them since the merger, but have had crabby attendants on them all. Including Lufthansa. Haven't flown Swiss yet... My worst transatlantic flight was with Northwest...

We used to say, "Time to spare, fly US Air." I have taken the flight and would agree with others that there is nothing especially good to rave about or poor to complain about. Unless they have upgraded, there is no personal entertainment system behind the seats. But its a bearable flight and the Philly airport is not too bad, depending on your ultimate destination.

Re: Anyone used US Airways ZRH-PHL?

Thanks for the replies everyone - very useful feedback.

My main gripe trans-atlantic is that it is hard to find good service - I really miss the enjoyment of a flight with a good Asian or Middle Eastern airline as i find the European and American airlines serving the US from Switzerland very poor in economy trans-atlantic - using outdated aircraft with non-existent in flight entertainment and staff who tolerate passengers rather than serve them. I am not willing to pay a $5,000 premium for the wife and I to business class as we really don't have that kind of cash and prefer to spend on good hotels rather than so much for a few hours on a plane.

End result is we have booked our next trip from Frankfurt-JFK with Singapore Airlines. They now operate the A380 on this route - and best of all using a configuration which offers a few economy class seats on the upper deck as well as the hundreds downstairs. They aren't the cheapest, Frankfurt airport sucks and it is a bit of a pain driving 4 hours there but that way we were able to pay a $50 each premium each way to secure exit row seats with loads of legroom and the upper deck is 2-4-2 so we have 2 seats on our own with full in-flight entertainment and a choice of meals. In other words for about CHF900 each all-in we are able to fly in what is arguably comparable to the premium economy service offered by BA and Virgin Atlantic for about CHF1400 - and without having to change flights.

If you want to figure out what airlines fly between certain locations, what is the cheapest, shortest, etc etc, just use http://matrix.itasoftware.com/ which contains as good as every airline there is and shows everything in an easy overview.

For your ZRH<->PHL trip though there is not much more choice than US Airways unless you go for more expensive combos which then suddenly do include Swiss which is generally a bit more comfy than US Airways or heck Delta.....

Re: Anyone used US Airways ZRH-PHL?

I also was looking at U.S. air for a conection this summer in Philly, it was the cheapest flight to the U.S. I could find. It included three stops.. so finally went with another Airline with one stop as it will just be my son and I. On another note, I also wonder has anyone looked at the Swiss Air prices? I checked them on internet Zurich to Des Moines Iowa in July and the internet price was 14,966.80 for my son and I?? Any other airline runs 2,800 to 3,800 on the internet. I checked it twice as I thought for sure it was a mistake... lol It costs more in Switzerland, must be the answer.

Due to taxes etc it does depend on where one buys a ticket indeed, though rarely that much, if you take the site I posted above and take a 7 day stay for next month you get a ~1000 USD price round trip with United over EWR.
You do need to book then directly at the airline and you are set.
