Cheap day trips from Geneva with the best views

Hi, first off -sorry in advance if I'm just re-asking what's been answered a thousand times, but I've looked through the threads and don't think I've found my answer...just let me know if I've missed it.

My friend is going to be visiting me in Geneva in late April, and I wanted to show her what people mean when they say Switzerland is breathtakingly beautiful. She also said she really wants to go to the mountains, but here's the problem -we're both students, and majorly on a budget, and a lot of the places are pretty expensive to get to (I don't have a car, so it's all busses and trains). Any ideas for good places to go? I know I said Switzerland, but places in France are fine, too. I went to Annecy earlier, and something like that, with a cute town and excellent view, but closer/cheaper to get to would be ideal. Perhaps places you can get to with the Geneva public transport system? I was thinking of taking her to the Saleve, since you can get there on the bus, and I've heard it has great views -thoughts? Any other options like that?

Thanks in advance for your help!

If you are resident in CH (or have friends that are), then get a Gemiende Tageskarte for one or two days that your friend is over. The Tageskarte allows free travel on nearly all SBB trains, as well as a large number of ferries (Zurich, Geneva?, Lucerne) and local city transport systems. You book it is advance from your local community (town hall) for a specific day, and pick it up/get sent to you. Combine that with a couple of sandwiches and a couple of beers, and you can have a full day out quite cheaply!

(web site available in English)
p.s. use google maps for getting a rough idea of journey times using public transport.
p.p.s. my 'Gemeinde' sells them for 40 CHF but unfortunately is already sold out for Sat 17th March when we have friends visiting, so don't delay, look today!

http://www.tageskarte-gemeinde.ch/ does it in EN, DE and FR

Select the parish / commune and view for the desired period in April. Book online EARLY, and pay cash at the parish office.

Give PostAuto a go ( select what pleases you both ):

Link about the télépherique, in french I'm afraid.
There used to be a bus out that way from Rive but it seems to have disappeared under the new regime, but the 44 from Tours-de-Carouge to Croix-de-Rozon-Douane will get you within a five minute walk of the télépherique station at the foot of the Salève.
This site says tickets are €21 return (they'll almost certainly take swiss francs as well), but the site's not been updated since 2008 so that's probably gone up a bit!
Well worth the trip as on a clear day you really can see for miles. If you take a picnic it's a great day out.

Re: Cheap day trips from Geneva with the best views

Awesome, thank you guys. Question about the Gemiende Tageskarte...do I have to be a permanent resident? Or would being a student and having a student visa and residence here count (I'm only staying short term-just for the semester). Also, do I have to be a resident of the specific commune? Since the three in the Geneva canton are all not actually the city of Geneva.

Being a resident is enough to get a Tageskarte from your commune / parish. In FR it is the Carte journalière commune.

Whichever commune / parish you are registered with as a resident, allows you to purchase from the commune / parish offices. But the Tageskarte can be used by anyone, including overseas visitors as it is not personalised.

Bus 8 to Veyrier-Douane / cablecar certainly hasn't disappeared, I take it every day to and from work.

Croix de Rozon 5 minute walk to the cable car? If you "walk" at 40km/h...maybe :-)
