Living in Switzerland

Hey everyone!
My partner and I are leaving Australia to go live in Europe for a year. Our first stop will be Switzerland for 3 months as I previously did a student exchange there.
As an exchange student I didnt get to really see how much it would cost to live there as I was provided with everything from my host families.

So Im asking anyone that has travelled or moved to Switzerland how much CHF would you recommend my partner and I to have per month together?

This may exclude accomodation for one month, as we will stay with my families then. The other two months we will travel around. How much per month would be safe?

Exclude transport as we will get a year pass.

Accomodation whilst travelling, food & drinks, museums, entertainment, clothes, tourist attractions etc...

Please Help!!!!

HI and welcome to the Forum.

Sadly, it's an impossible question to answer, but undoubtably it'll be more than you'll think necessary.

Consider two people going out in Zurich for a pizza each with a bottle of wine can easily tip CHF80+ and take it from there...

Re: Living in Switzerland

Very difficult question.

Consider:
  • Accommodation during travelling: Will cost you probably a minimum of Sfr 100 per night regardless of where you go.
  • Food & Drinks: As stated above, everything is expensive. If your planning on eating out for 2, probably don't expect to pay anything less that Sfr. 60 unless you plan on just eating the salad. Add wine to that and your looking at a much bigger number.
  • Museums: Entrance on average from 9 - 20 francs.
  • Entertainment: A movie here goes for around 14 francs, with popcorn etc, look at prolly 20 francs.
  • Clothes: Haha, don't buy your clothes here. Pair of Levi's 150 francs. Tshirts are round 50 francs, pants in the 70's etc. Though you can buy cheaper and poorer quality clothing at places like C&A or H&M, I guess any store that has an ampersand in it's name.
  • Tourist Attractions: Hmm, mountain cable cars maybe? So 15-20 francs one way on most routes but can be more expensive.

Switzerland is small and pricey. It'll be more expensive than you think.

I hope you have visa arrangements - most of Europe is Schengen now, which means you have a grand total of three months stay allowed before having to exit for at least three months.

You mentioned that you will be getting a year pass? I remember reading an article in news.com.au which told the story of a journalist travelling around SUI with a pass. I don't know the name of the pass but I do remember that as well as transport it covered many things including museums, boat rides and also mountain lifts. So before purchasing your pass it may pay to have a look at the different types of passes available to tourists.

No accomodation will not be difficult.
Meal: only sandwich from Migros and COOP: 30 CHF/day maximum. If go to restaurant, easily go up to 100 CHF/meal without wine. Drink: coffee in shop around 2 CHF/cup.
Museum: normally 10-20 CHF. Some are free.
Entertainment: depends on what you want. Concert and pub are different prices.
Clothes: buy clothes in Switzerland?

No visa arrangements because we are only staying for 3 months then moving onto Ireland which is not part of the Schengen region.
