Friends coming over to visit

Hey people,

My friends of my homecountry are coming over in vacation and I want to show them the popular and fun places to go in Basel. But I haven't been living here for that long, so I don't know Basel that well myself.

Do you guys have any suggestion on where I could go with them both daytime and nighttime? Are their like touristic things I should definitly take them to and what kind of going out parts of the city or bars do you recommend?

Thank you so much!
Pepino

St. Jakobs Park may be worth a look.

Re: Friends coming over to visit

My hubby is a bit of a homebody so I'm not too sure about night time things, for daytime though, it depends some on what sorts of things you and your friends find of interest.

As mentioned, there is of course the Zoo, it is quite nice I think, with a show with the seals at feeding time. I was there last year and there was a baby hippo which was quite cute. To me it says a lot about a zoo if the animals are breeding.

Speaking of zoos, there is another, but mostly featuring local animals, at Lange Erlen "Tierpark". I went here with my mother-in-law, it's a good spot for an afternoon / Sunday stroll. If you're more keen on a natural'ish walk, the park is situated on the Weiss river, which has long walking paths along each side. This is a very rocky river, a lot of people make use of the stones to form grill pits, if the weather is nice, there will likely be a lot going on.

If you're more into indoor things and / or antiquities and ruins, there are several museums around town, Augusta Raurica not far and worth the visit, as is Schloss Dornach (Dornach Castle ruins). I've been several times to Dornach with my mother-in-law, more specifically, to the Restaurant Schlosshof Dornach, as they serve meringues with gruyere whipped cream, a favorite of hers.

The area around the Dornach castle ruins have several trails, I've seen folks that look like they're ready or have been out for a hike, as well as others on mountain bikes. I've also noticed they have grill pits.

A good place to check what may be going on is the Basel Tourism website, it is available in several languages.

Re: Friends coming over to visit

The Basel tourism website has a lot of ideas:

http://www.basel.com/en.cfm/offiziel...le-155065.html

Perhaps try one of the guided tours - if you're new to the place perhaps it's worth doing.

Not lived in Basel for a while, but "typical" Basel bars for me would be Cargo, Fischerstube, Löwenzorn, Parterre / Kaserne, Steinlemer, Unser Bier, Lalle König.

Cheers,
Nick

Re: Friends coming over to visit

i definitely recommend the zoo! we have been here in basel for nearly a year now (only recently joined EF!) and we only just went to the zoo this weekend gone when my cousin came to visit with her two little girls. was pretty impressed by it. they are currently building a big new enclosure for the gorillas which looks quite impressive, opening at some point in the summer.

if your friends like walking/mountains etc there is a cable car you can go up at Reigoldswil-Wasserfallen that is about 40mins away from basel (train to liestal from SBB then number 70 bus to reigoldswil), then you can walk around the rop, even come down the mountain on a scooter thing!!

Also fun is the solarbob in langenbruck

To go a bit further afield, and albeit not in switzerland, and depending on how long your friends are here, i would definitely recommend a trip to colmar (about 50mins on the train from SBB) in alsace, lovely little town and some great food :-)

In terms of places in Basel, cafe des artes is good for cocktails at barfuesserplatz, i have been told bar rouge by the messe/ramada jarvis is also good for cocktails...ueli in kleinbasel is a nice little pub/bar with its own microbrewery, and another place we tried out recently that we liked also at barfusserplatz is the zum braunen muntz, nice bar decent prices for switzerland!

Re: Friends coming over to visit

HOw active are you? your friends? A novel way to see Basel is to do a guided running tour ( speed adjusted for individual groups) through the centre.

www.baselruningtours.com
They are fun, with lots of quirky Basel information throughout the tour. ( you jog, stop, all the way. )

OR: The weather is great at the moment, so how about a round the bridges walk, to see Basel from both side s of the river. Go between the MIttelbrucke and Westeinbrucke, or even up one more bridge. Take in the Tuingley museum and any of the numerous outdoor cafes along the way.

OR: use bikes and go on a "3 country tour" between Basel, France and Germany. If it is a Saturday, include the St Louis vegetable market and a look at the whitewater kayaking in HUningue. there is a relaxing cafe just over the walking bridge, on the german side.

HOt day? go for a swim down the Rhine.
