Day trip from Geneva to Jura

Planning one day towards Jura (we have been once to Lac de Joux, but that's all), not more than 1 1/2 hour's drive from Geneva to Jura. Where would you go? What would you visit?

We like to combine a family hike with a meal somewhere, or discovering a nice little town or village. Thank you for suggestions.

Re: Day trip from Geneva to Jura

You could come up to Ste-Croix - visit the music box museum - then have a nice hike up to the Chasseron or the Creux du van - lots of super mountain restaurants in the area..
I would wait till the weather is a bit warmer though - if we are around, maybe we could come with you?

I am sure lovely Odile will be around soon aswell to suggest some more things..

Vallorbe is also a good place to visit as there are quite a few things to do there. You can visit the Caves, the Iron Museum, the underground World War II fort up in the hills above the town and there's a wildlife park nearby as well.

St. Ursanne is a beautiful Medieval old town in Jura with an old Monastery, Castle ruins and Hermitage along as a wonderful setting for walks along the Doubs.

Thanks so much for all the suggestions and thank you Odile too for a whole page of ideas! It would be great to meet up indeed! I am waiting for the weather to improve a little bit + I've got a big deadline for work for 7th May, but after that, we are definitely heading to Jura!

Where you'd be most welcome. And get in touch if you want to meet for coffee, lunch, the walk, or even a guide to any of my favourite haunts, Gorges de la Poetta Raisse (from Motier) or Creux-du-Van from Couvet, or Chasseron from Buttes or St Croix.

The hike above Passweng is nice, although I tend to be on the Iron Pony, and Hohe Winde is worth going up to for the view from the tower

Re: Day trip from Geneva to Jura

You're back on your quotas?! The whole family would be delighted to meet you at last...we've still got a printout from your post TWO years ago (before we even moved to Switzerland!) where you were warning us about the incompatibility of U.K washing machines with Swiss units.... So it will be our treat (lunch) and you'll be our guide for the day!

A pleasure - looking forward to it. How about spending the week-end?

PS - Keeping old posts - OMG - you will be in real trouble if you own up to this here. I can feel a new forum coming on !!!

Bexie, I do not understand the bits you are talking about, lol. Around here we speak French, lol.

Re: Day trip from Geneva to Jura

One of our favorite walks starts in Croy (about 1h train ride from Geneve) with a walk up to see the quaint village and gorgeous monastery at Romainmotier.

Then we walk along this trail, following a small river for the most part, and pass by two nice peaceful waterfalls*, ending up in La Sarraz (where there is a castle to visit, if you wish). In La Sarraz right next to the train station, there's also a decent place with an outdoor terrace and a nice view to reward yourself with a panache or whatever.

In the area, there's also a loop walk featuring different water fountains (see #4).

*This map doesn't include the second waterfall. Follow signs (very well signposted) to Ferreyres a little while after the first waterfall.
