Jungfraujoch Day Trip and Ski Park

Hi,

I have a couple of friends living with me in the hostel, who would like to sightsee for one day in The Alps. Jungfrau jumps out at me from a little bit of googling, but then after a few ski sessions so does the ski fun park that is there.

As one of my friends has never seen snow before living in ZA, is there enough space at the summit where the train leaves you to throw a few snowballs etc., or is it constricted to a balcony with just views.

If you can leave the station/restuarant area, how big a space is it, for photos and just having a wander round?

Does anyone know more about the ski fun park? The type of runs etc, suitable for beginners and is there rental?

Crucially, can you do it in a longish day from Basel?

Thanks!

Re: Jungfraujoch Day Trip and Ski Park

Depends very much on the weather and on the snow conditions. You can in theory get out onto the glacier and walk for a fair way, but on both occasions I have been up there the exit was closed because of avalanche danger.

There are two other smaller outside areas - one on snow, the other on a metal viewing platform. The indoor parts are pretty gloomy - dark, often underground, full of tacky souvenir shops.

Personally, if planning a long day out from Basel, I would go to the Gornergrat at Zermatt - it's outdoors and the views are much, much better than at Jungfraujoch, at least in my opinion.

Both Jungfraujoch and Gornergrat are between four and four and a half hours from Basel by train.

Re: Jungfraujoch Day Trip and Ski Park

I have done the Jungfarujoch trip once as a day trip from Basel, with a visiting friend. Yes, there is room to throw a snowball.

When we were there, there was also a short slope where one could go down sitting on a round plastic disc - hardly a great toboggan run, but acceptable for people who have never been in the snow before.

On a clear day you can stand in the outside snow area and take photographs of each other from various angles, with a choice of three different mountain peaks in the (real) background.
