The Alpes Vaudoises are even closer, I currently know nothing about them (hope to start exploring them this summer).

... which is a very good idea
Would love suggestions of a base for a week of hiking (not too strenuous) in the Alpes Vaudoises in September.

Re: Base for hiking in the Alpes vaudoises

Are you looking for a town/village, or specific accommodation? What sort of style/budget?

Chateau d'oex is nice, or les Diablerets. Or on the other side the spa village of Ovronnaz- or Leysins. So many resorts - or perhaps something in the valley floor, for quicker access to public transport to the various mountains, like Lavey or Aigle. Or even Montreux.

A great walk from Leysins is up to the revolving restaurant (on foot or by chair-lift) then down and up all along the Tour d'Ai, with the via ferrata above - with a fabulous view of central switzerland to the north and the alps to the south. Breathtaking.

I am looking for a village, much like Évolène, from which I can hike without using public transport almost every day. Happy to take a short bus/train ride a couple of times for greater hiking variety.
