Re: Christmas market reviews

Hi,

Has anyone gone to Colmar in Alsace - I have heard it is a lovly old town. Just wondering what the Christmas market is like as we are considering going here inth next few weeks.

PS was down in Barfusser Platz in Basel and the market was excellent everything you would expect and St Nick himself put in an appearance and handed out some nice Santa shped chocs for the kids!

Highly recommend it.

Re: Christmas market reviews

Colmar is lovely, even without its highly reputed market.

But it's gonna be more that packed, as it is a very very popular destination in December. Parking will be next to impossible and hotels have been booked full weeks ago. I strongly advise to use public transports to go there.

Of all the Christmas markets I have visited in Switzerland, I have to say the one at the Zurich main station is the worst. It is clearly evident by their attitudes that the vendors are only interested in your money. The prices are extortionist, and it is crowded. There is little change in stands and what they sell from year to year, even the location of the stands is static. I avoid it now. The one in Bremgarten is the one we visit now.
Totally agree with this comment, Zurich HB market doesnt even qualify as a christmas market

Re: Christmas market reviews

I agree. And I'll let you into a trade secret. Those huts cost the best part of 10,000 for the 28 days. Add that much again for staff costs so how much tat do the stalls have to shift just to cover their costs.

We only do the 4 day Veniti one in Luzern and the 3 day one in Rapperswil which are much more realistically priced and more pleasant to visit.

Mr Grumpy.
I assume you are doing Rapperswil this year? I noticed from the website that it seems to be running across 2 weekends this year? From 14th to 23rd Dec? Or maybe my dodgy Deutsch is letting me down.
Will you be there both weekends?

It was 9 days last year which we did but it didn't work out for us during the week so we're only doing the 2nd weekend. We're also at Luzern Kappelplatz that weekend too.

Re: Christmas market reviews

The Stans Christmas market is highly recommended for handmade arts and crafts. There weren't many stands selling commercial goods... it was mainly knitted things, candles, woodwork, jewellry and other nice goods with a personal touch.

Re: Christmas market reviews

One thing I really like about Christmas markets in Switzerland overall, is that they insist on sellers only selling non mass produced arts and crafts, and mostly only home-made by the sellers - like the one in Neuchatel by the Port- sadly in a great big white markee tent.

In the UK there is a Christmas market in Lincoln - but sadly most stalls just sell usual market tat- and there is hardly any real artisans there.

So personally it may be a good idea to comment on 2 aspect: the setting and also the type and quality of goods/crafts for sale. Lincoln is lovely, but the market goods are just tat.

.
Take the train fro Basel to avoid parking problems. Also, on the way back, stop in at the Mulhouse market as well - I enjoy them both as they have a slightly different feel and flavour from the Basel one.

Re: Christmas market reviews

I will put another work in for the Montreux Christmas market.
It is quite large, lots of nice food, and the setting is gorgeous (along the lake). If you are so interested, there are also things aimed more towards children at Caux and Rochers-de-Naye. The trip up to these places from Montreux are lovely.
