Ticino - Centovalli Railway?

Hi there!

My mom is visiting me and I have decided to do a little trip to Ticino.

I decided to go to Lavertezzo and after that to look around in Lugano and booked a hotel for one night in Locarno.

For second day I thought about the Centocalli Railway - is it worth it?
And if we take it to Domodosolla, where would you recommend to go from there?
The plan is to make it back to Zürich with atleast the latest possible train.

My mom would love to see abit of Italy!

I would be happy to get any recommendations you can think of.
Thanks!

Re: Ticino - Centovalli Railway?

Welcome to the forum!

Locarno - > Domodossola ( CH/IT ) uses the FART ( long tram like ride with beautiful scenery Ferrovie Autolinee Regionali Ticinesi ). If you have a GA or Tageskarte, there is no other fee to use it.

From Domodossola, take the EuroCity / InterCity trains to Brig -> Thun -> Zürich.

FART

Try a double lake cruise in Thun:

Re: Ticino - Centovalli Railway?

We went on it from Locarno to Domodossola and then up to Visp and Brig (and actually on to Zermatt). It was lovely - very slow and windy .. it takes almost 2 hours.

But if you fancy a few hours just in Italy, then what about taking the hydrofoil along the lake as far as the Islands of Bresola or to the lakeside town of Stresa. It is quaint (although Ascona is just as quaint) and you can eat a good pizza! You can then return on the mainline train from Stresa up to Visp (passes through Domodossala) or go back along the lake.

The lake is big and it takes a long time to get down from Locarno/Ascona to Stresa, so the hydrofoil (which from memory goes once in the morning and you need to reserve a seat on) is a good answer as well as being a quite fun way to travel. Once down at the Stresa end, you can use the normal boats to hop on and off the several islands that are in the lake infront of Stresa.

Unless you are train mad, I would suggest that the lake/Stresa visit is your better option than the Centovalli (although we did enjoy it to be sure).

PS: Swiss Railways day cards are (check this .. )valid on the Centovalli stretch - the GA certainly is (that's what we used).
