things to do in Zurich ( whilst English )

The weather being well ( fingers crossed ) Mrs. and I will be boarding the Royal train to Zurich Saturday coming, returning to these southern shores the following day perhaps tea-time.

Could someone kindly recommend activities to amuses one's self ... apart from getting totally hammered on Pimms?

We thank you,

Mrs. has been before but this will be my first visit.

Our activities are largely centered around food and low impact sight seeing ( I hung up my hiking boots some time back )

p.s.. we will probably only have Sunday morning as I expect we will be spending a fair amount of time saturday at Grumpys' street party.

Re: things to do in Zurich ( whilst English )

I would recommend the following in that case:
  • Walk through the old town.
  • Walk by the Limmat, if you're going to the viaduct you might do this on Saturday it's about a 15-20 mins walk.
  • Walk by the sunny side of the lake towards the chineese gardens.
  • If you're too tired, you can take the S10 to the top of the Uetliberg, the view is quite impressive from the viewing platform.
  • Of course a walk down bahnhofstrasse all the way to Paradeplatz is a must.
I will draw up an itinerary on google maps for you.

Here are some ideas. You must try the Cafe Conditerei Schober in the old town.

Here, apparently, is the perfect day in Zurich...

Ok here is the Itinerary Grynch...

When you get to Quaibruecke, you can then walk along the lake promonade, google map doesn't show it just go along and stop by at Badi Utoqai or just carry on along towards the chineese gardens, I'm sure you'll find something to amuse yourself with.

Not sure how it would work on a Sunday morning but one of my favourite places to visit is the Grossmünster Church. It has really beautiful windows.
If you like that kind of thing it's great. You can go up the tower for CHF4 too I think, should have great views of Zurich from up there although I've not seen for myself.

Re: things to do in Zurich ( whilst English )

Great views from the Grossmunster, however it is only open to the public after the service.

On Sunday it is the confirmation service at 10.00, according to the website.

'Whilst' is archaic and is no better or more correct than 'while', if anything its less correct.

Keeper has no particular reputation at present
Re: things to do in Zurich ( whilst English )

If you choose to walk around the old town, stop by the tourist office first to pick up a map of city walks which point out the major sights.

If you like churches, then you must check out Chagall's stained glass windows in Fraumuenster.

Re: things to do in Zurich ( whilst English )

This thread has been extremely useful as we are doing exactly the same thing.

We figured it was a good opportunity to combine a social gathering with a bit of sightseeing. Only difference is we will have a young one tagging along too so maybe not the churches. (I daren't say little one anymore as he is almost as tall as me)

Thanks Grynch for starting the thread.

I think it means you are becoming more and more English .

The Difference Between “While” and “Whilst”

'Both while and whilst have been in the language for a very long time. While was in use in Old English; whilst is a Middle English development of while. As conjunctions they are interchangeable in meaning, but whilst has not survived in standard American English.
I waited whilst Mugabe delivered what he thought were his pearls of wisdom…
I waited while breakfast was finished.
To the American ear whilst sounds quaint. Some British and Canadian speakers think it sounds literary or old-fashioned, but many British speakers prefer it to while.'

I think 'whilst' sounds better in this context. (The title).
Anyway, back to the topic.

Does this mean I'm reverting to my roots ( a.k.a. "are my roots showing?" )
