Maggiore Lake or Lugano Lake? With UBS voucher

So I managed to get a UBS voucher which allows me to travel for 5 Fr. at one of the lakes. I thought to visit one of the two lakes in the Swiss-Italian region - Maggiore Lake or Lugano Lake. So I am torn between the two choices as I have never taken boats on both lake before and both seem nice for me. I will base in Milan, can anyone suggest me which destination I should choose for a day trip out from Milan on an October Saturday by public transport? I know for the Maggiore Lake it is restricted to the Swiss side while for Lugano Lake there is no limitation. Should I go for Lugano Lake then?

Thanks for your opinion.

I would prefer Lake Maggiore.

Thanks! Borromean_Islands seem nice but they are not in the Swiss side...so I may need to get another ticket.

Any Lugano Lake supporter?

Am just curious. For those who got the UBS voucher, where did you go? Ok it is a bit out of topic...

Another Maggiore fan - although I've never spent time on Lake Lugano, so I can't compare the two.

I like the Italian side - and the islands linked by Jrspet are certainly worth a stop. I have fond memories of a delightful lunch on one of the islands - maybe Pescatori?

If you are looking for a place to stay, I recommend the Hotel Cannero, in Cannero Riviera:

Actually, the food is absolutely fantastic, as well as the prices. I would spend a day / night in Stresa itself.

Re: Maggiore Lake or Lugano Lake? With UBS voucher

be careful that the summer season / timetable for lago maggiore ends on 16 September (I don't know what happens after that, probably a much reduced service or nothing at all). Lago di Lugano finishes 21 October.

Plus points for Lago di Lugano (Lago Ceresio for the Italians)
- they accept half tax, so you can get to italy without paying tourist prices
- although i never ate on it, it seems the lunch boat is well organised

Obviously maggiore is much bigger and feels like you are on a sea, not a lake. Lugano is still nice though, maybe head towards Gandria, Porlezza, it's also nice to see Morcote, I wouldn't bother too much with Ponte Tresa, Porto Ceresio is ok for a trip to Italy, but it sounds like you are already there so who cares.

Re: Maggiore Lake or Lugano Lake? With UBS voucher

After my in-laws with my son last summer got 'grounded' on the Italian boat on Lago Maggiore and had to be rescued with another boat, I'd go with Luganosee. We'll be doing the boat ride in 2 weeks time.
