Re: Gotthard Tunnel / Pass

We go thru the tunnel all the time to Como. We have never hit a huge jam, but sometimes slow up if you get behind a semi. If you leave early on Sunday, and make the pass before 9ish it's very smooth.

Hi,We experienced the traffic jam on our way home from Como on Saturday. The trip over the pass was spectacular but didn't gain us any time. Also wouldn't recommend it if you have car sick kids in the back!

Depart at 3-AM, or at the latest at 5-AM . You will be in the Ticino in the very early morning. Or depart in late evening and take a hotel room in a cheap hotel in Ambri-Piotta

Re: Gotthard Tunnel / Pass

Anyone been driving through lately... are there any roadwork delays at the north end? I'll be driving south on Saturday night about 9.30 so the tunnel should be pretty quiet I guess

Re: Gotthard Tunnel / Pass

Love my Gotthard Tunnel for many of years;and never have experienced a traffic jam nor road rage through it;specially whilst living in Weggis soo long.
Wave to the SOS rooms;and don't forget to play Switzerland's famous Gotthard rock band with the amazing voice of the late Steve Lee loud in your car. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_L...hard_singer%29

Happy Frûhling everybody!!

The tunnel is open south bound. But...the stau was all the way to bristen.

Safe travels...and bring extra music.

Re: Gotthard Tunnel / Pass

Indeed Friday nights coming up to Easter are going to be busy. Soundbound at Melide is rolling nicely right now.

I'd say tonight at your proposed time will be reasonable. They are also using lights from as far down into the valley as Amsteg so queues through the valley will release as you start the climb.

Re: Gotthard Tunnel / Pass

Just an update...

Saturday night driving south was completely clear. Driving north Sunday evening about 7pm there was a 3km queue to the tunnel but I was through that in half an hour with traffic then flowing freely at the speed limit all the way through. Not the nightmare I was expecting!

It was absolutely clear for us southbound at 8.30am on Sunday morning as you would expect, but we too hit the queue northbound in the evening. However, it has determined us to make sure we get through before lunchtime when we head off on our first Greek charter of the year the day before Good Friday. Suspect that Thursday could be a massive POETS day

Re: Gotthard Tunnel / Pass

So, Mrs Fish Paste has decided it's Ticino for us this long weekend, leaving Thursday morning, returning Sunday.

Warnings of the traffic were trumped by the weather forecast.

So, leaving Basel approx 5am Thurs, I'm happy to take the Gotthard Pass, but which junction to leave the motorway? Looks like 39 (Wassen) is about right, 6km or so before Göschenen. (Rule of thumb, 1km queue = 20 minutes, so 6km is equiv to a 2 hour queue at 7am, unlikely I think) As it'll be about 6:30am, I'm guessing that will avoid any tailbacks? Or do the traffic lights go back to there anyway?

Last time I went to Ticino, I got caught for about an hour before I managed to get off and take the pass, but the memories of which junction have faded.

I've read the other threads, but didn't mine this information.

Coming home on Sunday seems pretty straightforward, leave at junction 43 (or earlier).

All opinions welcome!

Sometimes they close the junctions if the tailback is long, to prevent people leaving the motorway and causing more tailbacks on the other roads. But at 7am in the morning this might not be a problem. Just check the TCS or the twitter feed sometime after you pass Altdorf for the latest info.

Re: Gotthard Tunnel / Pass

So got to Altdorf area about 6:45, already the TCS website said 2km of queues so came off at Amsteg. In the event, a junction too early as it was still free flowing at Wassen.
Some roadworks up to Andermatt, nothing serious.
Lovely drive over the pass.

Re: Gotthard Tunnel / Pass

So coming back didn't go to plan, at all.
Left Lugano about 2:30, ignored the matrix warnings to go via San Bernadino, primarily because the queue at Bellinzona was over 1km coming off the A2.
I left the A2 at Biasco, a junction too early as it was free to Faido at least.
And then disaster, queuing over the Gotthard pass, from before the top even!

At that point there was about 9km queues for the Gotthard tunnel and no way on at Airolo, so I'd have had to return Quinto and take the whole 9km queue!
Didn't want to do that so stuck it out over the pass, turns out the traffic lights at Andermatt caused a 12km queue over the pass, despite being under manual control!!!!
There were plenty of people doing U-turns, not sure if they faired any better.
Well after the point of no return for me the traffic reports picked up on the problem and were advising people to stay on the A2 and take the tunnel, despite the queue, which made 10km at one point.

Ended up Lugano > Basel took 5 hours 30 mins.
Oh well, I can't say I wasn't warned.

The pass would have been fine if it wasn't for those roadworks at Andermatt.

Re: Gotthard Tunnel / Pass

Tough luck there.

I got stuck in a 6km queue going the same way two of three weeks back on a Sunday afternoon, before the pass was open. Once through the tunnel, there was no queue at all for south bound traffic. Which got me thinking.....it MUST be possible to introduce some kind of contraflow for this situation i.e. use both lanes going North for 30 mins, then both lanes south for, say 15 mins.

But I guess the reason why this might not work is simply due to the length of the tunnel and the time it takes to get through it. I guess you'd end up with 10 or 15 mins where no one would be entering the tunnel at either end, whilst waiting for it to clear in order to switch directions.

Transport planners anyone?

Re: Gotthard Tunnel / Pass

And by the way, it didn't look like the Andermatt roadworks would be finishing any time soon, so watch out for next weekend, where Monday is a holiday.

Blick also reported the San Bernadino was also snarled up this afternoon.

The Gotthard Base Tunnel will be operational for trains from June 1st but SBB website stll doesn't give me an option to book Zurich - Milan trains for the promised 3 hours journey time. When will this become available?
