Re: Gotthard Tunnel / Pass

They don't change the timetable until mid of december, only when the have construction projects or diversions.
So the transit through the new gotthard tunnel(with reduced travel time ) will be in the new timetable, starting mid decmber 2016 .

Re: Gotthard Tunnel / Pass

I actually checked with SBB about this as am keen to know how this will effect on my commute between Ticino and Zug. SBB replied that the new timetables will be available mid May for the December when faster trains will start running.

Obviously because of the works starting between Zug and Arth-Goldau and building the new tunnel between Bellinzona and Lugano the full benefit of the new trainlines wont kick in until 2020.

Checked SBB for Zurich - Milan in January. The quickest EC train takes 3:26 hours, didn't they promise 2:30 hours travel time?

Haven't they slowed down the trains after they lately found a aerodynamic problem?

Re: Gotthard Tunnel / Pass

December 2016
Start of operations for the Gotthard Base Tunnel (SOO GBT)
Zurich–Milan: 3.5 hours, service every two hours. New EC service Zurich–Venice. Revision of services on the mountain route. Integration of TILO

Mid-2018
Further reductions in journey time.
Faster connections to Ticino from Zurich/Zug thanks to end of the Lake Zug East track closure

2020
More comfortable journeys with Giruno Giruno trains for EC services

Late 2020
Faster and more frequently through the Ceneri region.
Start of operations for the Ceneri Base Tunnel (SOO CBT) Zurich–Milan: 3 hours, hourly service; German speaking Switzerland and Ticino half hourly service; Giruno trains for IC services, too; double-deck trains; more seats at peak times; improvements to the regional trafc network in Ticino.

From the end of 2016, the journey from Zurich to Lugano will take up to 25 minutes less than it does today. Once the worksites at Lake Zug have been closed, travel time will decrease even further from as early as 2018. And when the Ceneri Base Tunnel is in operation too, you will be able to reach Lugano from Zurich in less than two hours. From the end of 2020, travel time between Germanspeaking Switzerland and Ticino will have decreased by up to an hour. In addition tolong-distance traffic, regional traffic in Ticino will also be significantly increased, the connections between Lugano, Bellinzona and Locarno will be upgraded from late 2020 and travel times will be considerably shorter.

SBB Gotthard Tunnel Update

So BBC got it all wrong:
Quote:
When full services begin in December, the journey time for travellers between Zurich and Milan will be reduced by an hour to two hours and 40 minutes.
