Gotthard Tunnel / Pass

Hi All,

I am looking to drive south, from Zurich to Como this Sunday. I keep hearing terrible stories about traffic in the Gotthard tunnel.

Does anybody have any idea if these terrible traffic jams are frequent on sundays?

also - is the gotthard pass (rather than the tunnel) worth it for the extra time?

Thanks.

Mark

JAMS ARE EVERY WEEKEND AND if you do go, make it very early otherwise expect jams of many kms.

Pass is quite nice.

Re: Gotthard Tunnel / Pass

The pass is a good option but I think you have to come off the motorway one or two junctions before *Göschinen otherwise you'll be forced to go through the tunnel.

We've done that route a few times and whereas it's a bit further in km, you more than make up the time plus you can have a break at the top. There's a hotel/restaurant.

*I'm crap with place names and directions so someone on here might be able to tidy up my advice about coming off the motorway around Göschinen.

Re: Gotthard Tunnel / Pass

The pass is fun if you like that kind of driving and so do your passengers. The queue for the tunnel can start before the turn off for the pass though.

My advice is to avoid Gotthard completely and head down Zurichsee to Chur and via the San Bernardino tunnel or pass. I've never had any traffic problems that way and the extra half hour it takes compared to a clear Gotthard run is worth it to avoid a potential four hour queue.

Also from there if you really want a scenic and twisty mountain pass, you can turn off at Splügen (before you get to San Bernardino) and take the Splügenpass over the mountains and end up north of Como with a pleasant drive down lake Como ahead of you.

Re: Gotthard Tunnel / Pass

come off at Erstfeld if you want the pass.

Sunday, southbound queues should be short. Friday queues are bad, Saturday is worse. Both directions.

Chiasso will also be slow and queuing. All weekend.

Re: Gotthard Tunnel / Pass

They should get off at Varenzo/Quinto to Ariolo to avoid most traffic, but it can sometimes be much further back. Then take the pass road over the mountain.

Super drive.

Re: Gotthard Tunnel / Pass

No no...there are many other places earlier to get off. They could try Chiggiogna/Faido also. But this might slow the trip down a bit...But...it is pretty.

Re: Gotthard Tunnel / Pass

The pass is quite challenging so sometimes you may end up behind someone driving very slow and overtaking is not that easy:

Re: Gotthard Tunnel / Pass

Hello
I'm a total technophobe and I really am getting quite panicked about my looming trip tomorrow.
I'm driving to mondada/cevio from zurich and I'm so worried about the traffic queue at the gotthard tunnel!
What is it like on a Monday? Should I avoid it? If so how? Where do I go? What do I put into my sat nav?
Oooppppsss getting myself all wound up again..........

Re: Gotthard Tunnel / Pass

it'll be fine. Friday, Saturday and Sunday are bad and Monday northbound can be bad.

Relax. If you're delayed, 1 hour max.

For info, look here at the Verkehrsprognosen for Sommer 2013, down the right hand side of the page.

FYI, that is the OLD Gotthard Pass. The new pass is much faster and has more opportunities for passing.
