Suggestions for a stopover from Zurich to Florence ( driving )

First week of October we are planning take 3 days off and drive to florence from zurich.

My understanding is it is about a 6 hour drive. I thought perhaps we could stay over somewhere on the route to break the journey. We would like a small town with a character. Anyone has done this journey? Would you pls recommend a town and a hotel for the stopover?. Also a hotel recommendation in florence would be wellcome.

I don't know of a hotel but I definitely can recommend a great little trattoria in a small piazza called Tre Leone. If you're looking for a nice dinner location with authentic food and nice setting try Il Parione.

We did that drive last year and stopped off for a night in Como, stayed at the Hotel Leno. It was great but driving through Como can get quite stressful if you have a wide car as the streets are very narrow.

It's 6-7 hours usually from Zurich (depending on traffic).

Personally, I'd drive straight through, as you only have three days!

We stayed at a lovely B&B just above Menaggio on Lake Como. A bit off the beaten path but well worth it.

In Florence, do you want something in town or you don't care if it is a bit out since you have a car?

I would be ok with somewhere few kms out of town as long as its a nice little hotel.

You are right. But we,ll leave zurich thursday after work about 6 pm so thought would be a good idea to stopover somewhere and spend the first couple of hours in the morning to soak the atmosphere over breakfast and coffe.

As you'll be arriving in Italy at around 9PM, you'll need to reserve a hotel, as you will probably have trouble finding one that late.

I usually use http://www.venere.com/ for finding hotels in Italy and booking them.
