Weekend in Switzerland - or Italy - or somewhere else?

HI,
What's a good week end trip from Geneva?
My boyfriend and I would like to take a 2 day trip but can't decide between Geneva, Montreux, Sion or, Geneva, Chamonix, Torino.

We only have Saturday and Sunday. Any recommendations?
JP

Re: week end in Switzerland

I find Geneva rather dull beyond the beauty of the location and view of the Jura and Mont Blanc mountains. When I have friends visiting this part of Switzerland I encourage them to head to the mountains either in the Valais region or take a rail trip up to Interlaken. Just my $ 0.02.

We are in Geneva and we will probably stay in Switzerland although we thought about going to Italy.

Why not head out towards the Mont Blanc tunnel, go through it and spend the weekend in Italy @ www.courmayeur.com (just the other side) a lovely village with good shops, bars, restaurants and you can also ski if its open.

You know what...the great thing about living in Switzerland, is that we are so spoilt for choice...

Sorry, thats not very helpful. How about Dresden in Germany? I have just been and it is amazing...

are you traveling by car? train? plane?

If by car, I would go to Torino & vicinity and see what's happening there.

Milan is not too far. You can definetly make it there easy by car or train. I've done it.

Re: Weekend in Switzerland - or Italy - or somewhere else?

From Geneva 2 weeks ago we went to the Piemonte region of Italy We stayed in Barolo (wonderful). Had great food, wine & it was truffle season also. We stayed at Brezza this is a hotel and restaurant I would highly recommend about 100 euros a night new building. Family restaurant great food. I loved it so much I want to go every year. We drove from Geneva through the Mt. Blanc tunnel and it was about 3.5 hour drive. Hope this helps. THis was also a weekend trip stayed Friday & Sat. night

Lyon, only an hour and a half by car, lovely city and the gastronomic capital of France, guaranteed to eat and drink well.

Evolène, above Sion, rather picturesque and very well maintained typical mountain village.

Re: Weekend in Switzerland - or Italy - or somewhere else?

We ended up visiting Rivaz and Montreux along Lake Leman and then had fondue in Sierre at Chateau de Villa. We spent Saturday night in leukerbad and visited the thermal baths. This was a treat and the drive to leukerbad was amazing.

On Sunday we stopped at Sion and visited the cathedral that sits on top of the hill. We visited the art museum Pierre Gianadda in Matigny (unfortunately they are setting up for the next exhibit so we couldn't see the collection of paintings.)

The trip was relaxing and a bit off the beaten track. It was good for an overnight.

Thanks for all the tips!

Sounds great! I have visited all those places and you really picked some great spots. The museum imn Martigny has some of the bst exhibits. We saw a Rodin exhibit there that was fantastic. You must go back. Sierre/Cran Montana/ Aminona is one of our favorite spots to go 2 or 3 times per year. Glad you enjoyed Montreux and that view form the lake.

Hi, there. We just got back from a week of skiing in Sion/Nendaz. On our last day, we attempted to get to Leukerbad and spend a day at the thermal bath in Burgerbad and perhaps get a massage. Our attempt never materialized because on our drive up to Leukerbad, we faced a road that was closed (the sign said danger of avalanche. According to the map we had (we also followed the GPS) there was only one road up to Leukerbad, and this being closed, we assumed there was no way to get up to our destination. We turned around and left with 4 +/- more kilometers to our final destination.

Just for future reference, did we assume wrong in believing that was the only route up to Leukerbad? Are there any other road we could have taken to get up to there? We reached as far as Imden.

Thanks.
