We stopped in Luxembourg overnight once and spent a pleasant afternoon strolling through the old town.

Colmar is nice but in your favour.
Up into the Alsace is nice, put a pin in the map near the E25 and enjoy some French cuisine - use something like TripAdvisor to help you fine-tune....

I prefer Strasbourg, though Maastricht is nice, too.

Re: Nice place between Brussels & Zurich

Luxembourg must be the most boring city in central Europe. Spent 2 days there once and had a hard time even when trying to find a nice bar.

I'd recommend Köln (Cologne) in Western Germany. Nice town with an impressive church - just google Kölner dom.

Good luck!

Frankfurt would be an equal 4 hour drive for each of you. I'm sure you can find something to do there.

With three kids in tow, we weren't looking for a nice bar but the ramparts were great for exploring.

The problem with these threads is that the OPs rarely explain what they actually enjoy doing themselves so they'll get a mixed bag of answers.

Re: Nice place between Brussels & Zurich

I am biased as it happens to be my home town... but the obvious answer is the former capital of Europe:

I remember Heidelberg, being picturesque ..... but I was only there once - passing through - and that was over 40yrs. ago.
