Re: Basel in early December - what to do?

May I borrow this thread a bit?

We are looking for a hiking trip around Basel this weekend.

Can someone suggest me a trail that is passable (and fun, of course), even in winter conditions?
Something in the wild and no more than 5, 6 hours of walking (it gets dark early these days).

It would be nice if we could use public transport for the trip, but if I have to pull the car out of the garage, of course I'll do it.

Thanks.
There's a lot of nice walks starting around Reigoldswil (direct bus from Basel Aeschenplatz) and ending in Waldenburg (Waldenburgerbahn to Liestal, then any train to Basel).

I went two weekends ago and there was about 8cm of snow at worst, so it was no problem to walk in. I don't know how deep it is now though, but you can get an idea off this webcam:

You can either go up and over the hill (Wasserfallen and Passwang), or if it looks like there's too much snow you can go round via Liedertswil and Wil. It's all well signposted, and a PostBus comes along nearby if you want to cut the walk short.

Thanks for reply. It's very helpful.

Do you know where I can buy hiking/biking maps for this area? Maybe in some bookstore or there is some kind of dedicated store?

At Basel SBB there is a bookshop above the platforms called "Press and Books" - in the back left corner near the drinks fridge there is a basic selection of maps and books about walks in the Basel region (in German mainly).

Bider & Tanner at Bankverein is also good for a wider range of maps in different formats.
