La Gomera is lovely, but perhaps too quiet for many. I agree with Busby about Puerto de La Cruz in Tenerife- the old town is still there, with excellent restaurants, and the municipal series of landscaped pools by the sea front is great. Hire a car though, so you can drive up to the green north and the orangeries, etc. One of our daughters lives in the South- but when we are there we tend to drive to Puerto or further North for the day.
When I visited Tenerife I stayed in Puerto de la Cruz. I much preferred it to the South. I also visited La Gomera and had a scary coach drive along the mountain roads. The mountain whistling demonstration at the restaurant was good though

What I forgot to say about Puerto de la Cruz is that the best part of the town is La Paz, this quarter lies on a hill overlooking the town down below and is a lovely place for meandering and letting time go by. It also houses the Botanical Garden, the Orchid Garden and the English Quarter. All very lovely. There is also the Loro Park in PdlC which can be reached by a little road train - gratis - and the long walk back along the sea wall and into the town and the sea front is real pleasure.

Re: Which Canary Island??

Thanks all-good tips!
Booked Lanzarote due to flight times and prices. 4 people-all in chf 1200. Bargain!
Now just need to choose an area. Playa blanca(Marina area)looks like it fits the bill-anyone been?
Thanks!

Re: Which Canary Island??

I made the biiiig mistake of hitting Caleta de Fuste, a hard core tourist area, today.
Chav city, sunburnt brits in Engerlund t-shirts pining for a real cuppa or enjoying a all day breakfast with bacon, egg, sausage, beans, fried tomatoe and the first beer of the day.
Pudgy girls with cornrow hair, painfully white legs mottled with an assorted collection of bruises, pushing a pram, smoking a fag and a cellphone surgically attached to their ears.
One woman shouting at her young daughter: "DONŽT YOU (beep) SAY THAT TO ME AGAIN (beep) OR IŽLL (beep) TELL YOUR (beeping) FATHER THAT YOU (beep)..... etc. You get the guist.
Then when I thought it could not get more weird, I saw this:

It is just soo wrong.

Poor Slammer. He's on a holiday on the Canary Islands. I'm really trying to feel for you but it's just not working.

Re: Which Canary Island??

We liked charming Tenerife a lot with her volcanic history and tranquility. Most of the time we were hanging around Puerta de la Cruz with tennis facilities and swimming pool at the hotel though but when less lazy from basking in the sun, we went to see aqua park and island by car. Good shops, affordable watering holes and fantastic weather in December. Small new stands sell good rum and cheap cigars. Don't forget to collect stained glass from dark ash ridden beach. Never mind para gliders in the air, they know what their doing...

Re: Which Canary Island??

Lanzarote one of the great places to visit in the canary island is one of my favorite and probably the most memorable one. I'm a heavy drinker and theres this one place in Lanzarote where they made the finest if not the greatest wine called bodegas, man that was very nice! But the main reason for my visit in Lanzarote is because of surfing. One of friends told me to go during the surfing season which is November-March and I did! And it didn't waste my time at all and money well spent. I almost forgot It's the most memorable place for me because this is here I finally met her! Happily married for 7 yrs now with one lovely daughter. I'll be returning here anytime soon that's for sure. thanks for bringing back good old memories with this lovely. Anyways hope this link could help you learn more about this wonderful island ~https://www.canaryislandsinfo.co.uk/lanzarote/

Re: Which Canary Island??

I really liked Gran Canaria...we rented a car and managed to see a lot of things. To me it seemed really well organised, frankly I didn't expect such a good infrastructure there.
(I also managed to have the most severe sunburn I ever had but that was just part of the experience..hehe)
