KLM to charge checked baggage fees from April 2013

The dreaded airline bag fees have hopped the pond. Beginning in April 2013, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines will begin charging passengers for checked bags on flights within Europe.

According to KLM's website, the new fee for bags is in effect for flights booked on or after April 22, 2013. The cost of checking a bag will be 15 euros ($20) if paid in advance and 30 euro ($40) if paid at the airport.

Passengers who are in the Flying Blue frequent flyer program, or are flying to and from Belarus, Georgia, Italy, Russia, Turkey or the Ukraine may still check one bag free of charge.

Re: KLM to charge checked baggage fees from April 2013

I flew once with KLM. At the airport at Amsterdam, i counted 5 suitcases on the ground between where the plane was parked at the gate up to the runway.

I'll stay with hand luggage thanks

Re: KLM to charge checked baggage fees from April 2013

I was about to post the same thing:

KLM recently announced that it will be changing its baggage policy for European flights. For tickets booked as from 22 April 2013, check-in baggage will be a paid option for all passengers travelling in Economy Class.

Buggers!!!
So there's not many advantage to take then with their often more expensive tickets.
Oh sorry, yes there is!
You get an "in flight" refreshment and meal, a 15grams spretzel bag.

Air travel is just not as much fun as it used to be...might as well take a Wallace Arnold bus nowadays...

Just hand luggage

Quote:
Checking-in your first 23kg luggage costs:

• 15 €* (one way) if paid before getting to the airport

• 30 €* (one way), at the airport

The price for a second and third check-in baggage is:

• 45 €* (one way) if paid before getting to the airport

• 70 €* (one way), at the airport

The hand baggage policy (those you take with you on board) remains the same. You are entitled to one piece of hand luggage and one accessory (combined up to 12kg).

Re: KLM to charge checked baggage fees from April 2013

I am wondering. KLM is not a company but a trademark of
AirFrance-KLM, and I find it difficult to see the French swallowing such an idea.

International flights outside of Europe are exempt. (At least, as far as I understand)

Minor headache, but annoying all the same, was checking in to my flight between Portland and Orlando on my 3 leg trip over the winter. The female at the counter wanted me to pay for my bag (Delta, which is partner with KLM), but since it was only part of a whole international trip, I didn't have to pay. She was a bit miffed not to get that money out of me.

Re: KLM to charge checked baggage fees from April 2013

I always use KLM as it's the only airline that actually flies to where I want to get to in the UK, so I'm prepared to pay a premium for that.

While I think this charge for check-in baggage is taking the mickey a bit, it won't affect me as I never fly to the UK with checked in baggage. I can't stand all that waiting around at the baggage delivery point trying to suss out which bag is mine amongst a whole bunch of other bags which look pretty much the same. Besides I keep clothes at my mum's place, and if there's anything else I need I'll just buy it.

I like to travel as light and as stress free as possible.

Re: KLM to charge checked baggage fees from April 2013

I have nothing good to say about KLM. Absolute bastards. They must fly the oldest fleet in the world. I have never heard of them ordering a new plane. Last time they booted me off a plane because they "thought I was not going to make the connection". I made it with an hour to spare but they told me "computer rebooked me for the next flight", which just happened to be the following day.
