internet access?

I will be visiting Switzerland for 5 weeks. Is internet access available at coffee shops the way it is in the US free of charge or is there another way to access it for travelers?

Hotels are not as interesting to us since we will not be spending much time there, mostly Air B& B and out hiking/riding bike, on the streets etc. So I am concerned about how I'd use the internet in these situations--out and about mostly. Thanks.

You'll find some cafes/restaurants with wifi, some not, some open, some not. Often, they'll have a sign that says WIFI in the window. Bigger train stations usually have paid wifi.

You might think about getting a pre-paid SIM card while you're here, if you have an unlocked smart phone. You can get one at the airport, and my parents-in-law successfully got ones with just their passports (some people will tell you that you need a residence card). I have a pre-paid SIM card with Orange, and pay 10 CHF a month for 300 MB of data (http://shop.orange.ch/en/internet-mu...obile-internet).

Re: internet access?

I've been traveling through Switzerland for 2 weeks without pre-paid card or anything like that, so unfortunately I had to do some hunting for wifis. Sometimes you might find free wifi in city centers or famous places, but the most dependable are McDonalds You don't have to buy there (fortunately, I wouldn't pay them for anything) but you can just sit outside or even inside without any problems using their internet, and nobody will tell you a word. So, that's a good place when you're in long travel to sit, warm yourself (especially with the weather that was here in may) and check something on net.

One technical thing: they have a wifi that looks open, but still first you have to login through web browser (type any adress) and they will send you a code for 1h to mobile number that you type on form. That's it.

Re: internet access?

Oh Wow!!--You're there now with this bad weather and surviving. That gives us hope. Thank you for all the info on internet access. We will have a phone with us so that will be our way to do the trip planing, look for/book lodging, search for GF places to eat and so on. I do not think we could do it without the internet--and we need to translate most pages so we're totally counting on WIFI access.

One more thing Koshmaar, do hotels/hostels have towels or do we need to bring those with us? I know soap and shampoo is not common, but towels? We're doing it low budget--Air B&B and cheap hotels and I'm not sure what we can expect. The Air B& B is straight forward, but the hotels at that level, inns and such are unknown. Thank you so much.

Re: internet access?

I can recommend this http://www.swisscom.ch/en/residentia...t-connect.html

5 days, 5gb data, 36 chf.. You can easily extend the rental period online or at the shop and when finished you just drop it in the post to return and get the deposit back.

Re: internet access?

Same recommendation, you can choose the length of time you need access for from pre-set periods. Search Swisscom.ch
