Glacier Express to Zermatt

hey there!

We were lucky enough to find last minute accommodation in Zermatt yesterday. I am soo excited to go snowboarding and see the Matterhorn.

Now the only question i have is a) should i drive there (from Lugano) or b) take the normal train (lugano to Zermatt) or c) take the Glacier Express (not sure which stop to get on...)

Ideally, I would LOVE to go on the Glacier Express but is warily of leaving my car over the weekend at a random train station...My coworker told me that some trains can take your car with you to the destination.

1) Does anyone know if the Glacier Express has the capability to do so.

2) Also, which stop is a good stop to get on (near Lugano) so that I can experience the Glacier Express but not miss the "best part" of the ride...

Thanks!!!
Cecilia

No. By the way, which trains take the car to destination - I've not heard of many... Other than that Zermatt is a car-free town.

Andermatt.

But beware that the Glacier Express is actually rather slow unlike its name suggests. And some would say the best part is in the other direction towards St-Moritz and Davos.

Re: Glacier Express to Zermatt

You should be able to take a direct train from Lugano to Goeschenen, which is just on the north side of the Gotthard train tunnel, and from there connect onto the Glacier Express up to Andermatt. For there trains go down to Brig through the Upper Valais (Goms region), and from Brig you head up towards Zermatt. You'll have to check the SBB website for schedule details. You might be able to do it with one or two changes, but I'm not sure.

Alternatively, you can head to Locarno and take the Centovalli train through to Domodossola (very nice) and then take a train to Brig through the Simplon tunnel and connect onto the Glacier Express there.

Perhaps you could travel there one way and back another?

Heather

You can do this on the RhB trains going through the Albula pass. The catch is that your 'destination' has to be Samedan. Not sure about what others there are.

Re: Glacier Express to Zermatt

A friend drove from Norway to Les Arcs last week for two weeks and a large part of the journey (all of Germany) was done with the car on the train.
