Fondue in Zermatt

Hi, I will be going to Zermatt with some friends, and our plan is to have a walk around but we would love to have a fondue at a restaurant on the mountain, not on the city, with lovely views of the mountains, etc. Even have lunch outside, like many photos we see on the internet.

Is there any place you would recommend us? Can we walk up the mountain to get there or do we need to take the cablecar?

Thank you.

Re: Fondue in Zermatt

Hi,

In Zermatt I can aboslutly recomend Chez Vrony. It is one of the nicest restaurants I know in a ski resort and the food is great. I'm not sure if they have cheese fondue but they do have one of the best Roti and lot's of other tipical meals at high standard.
I'm sure they will have a website where you kind find all the information.
They are situated near the Sunnega lift so you can take a lift or make a long walk from Zermatt into the mountains.

Have fun!

Be prepared for some steep prices, even by Swiss standards!

Zum see is really good as well and only a short walk up from the bottom of the Klein Matterhorn gondola station. Take sledges and you can sledge back. Doesn't have such eat views as chez vrony though but authentic swiss farm setting.

Re: Fondue in Zermatt

That's true, that's another great place. Very cosy also!
Zermatt is loaded with great places to have lunch, dinner or a drink.
In general it's a great place for everything; the village itself, the appartments, nightlife, food and last but not least, the skiing!!!!!

Re: Fondue in Zermatt

I second the Zum See recommend - and add this one, Blatten. Not sure about fondue but the food is great and the staff are friendly. And then there's the view

http://www.blatten-zermatt.ch/willkommen_8.html

Also try Chämi Hitta - no website but either a walk down from Riffelalp station or up from Landtunnel station on the Gornergrat train. On the red slope from Riffelberg.

will go there this weekend, thank you for all advices!
Chämi Hitta isn't open in the summer.

Zum See is no cheaper than Chez Vrony. I actually prefer Zum See as a restaurant, but in the summer for the best view and sitting outside in the sun, I'd go with Vrony's… and the definitely do Cheese Fondue… although I wouldn't want a fondue in summer.

Oooh sounds exciting! Like the EF MI6. But either I'm not one of the chosen ones, or don't know where to look

Island Monkey, could you please say what do they serve there (at Zum See)? Swiss, Italian, international cuisine? Also, do you need a reservation? Thanks.

Swiss/Italian... Meat, rosti, pasta, spaztli that kind of thing.... Very very good! Chocolate cake is divine. You wouldn't need a reservation in summer I wouldn't think, but definitely in the winter!

Re: Fondue in Zermatt

We managed to skip this restaurant this time, unfortunately. It's on the to do list for the next time.
But we discovered a very picturesque little restaurant - du Pont, for some Swiss specialities, along with a nice one just next to this - Weisshorn, where we ate a delicious salad with lamb fillet.
So much to do next time on the "food" side, including the Sushi restaurant...I have the feeling that one can eat the real stuff there, just like in some restaurants in LA.

That's our normal hotel of choice when doing ski training in Zermatt. Very good food and a nice relaxed atmosphere in the bar/restaurant area.

And one of the cheaper places to stay, given its central location.

Yes, the restaurant is a proper fondue place, they're the oldest cheesehouse in town. It's actually a raclette/fondue stube.
If you go up Sunnegga is another place for having a good meal on the terrace - you have that buffet with salads, soups (an Austrian style goulash yam), rösti, etc. and the prices are also very good.
