Hike: Einsiedeln-Unterägeri

We are considering to do a one-day hike from Einsiedeln to Unterägeri - via Raten and Muetegg. Has anyone done hiking in this area and will it be worth going there?

We only have normal hiking boots (no snow shoes) so we are also interested in knowing if we can expect snow there - or to know where we could possibly find information about snow levels at different altitudes.

Or do you have other suggestions for a one-day hike - preferable with good mountain views - not to far away from Zurich and accesable now beginning of january?

Thanks in advance for any help and suggestions!

Re: Hike: Einsiedeln-Unterägeri

I did a good part of this in the opposite direction this time last year (Raten - Muetegg - Hohronen - Biberbrugg). I think you will need snowshoes if you are looking at doing it between now and April. It's a very easy hike in technical terms, but I think there is enough snow on the tops to make it very hard going without snowshoes.

A couple of other options in the same area (but you will also need snowshoes):
  • Sattel - Morgartenberg - Raten - Aegeri
  • Sattel - Morgartenberg - Rothenthurm
  • Rothenthurm - Nüsellstock - Näbikenfirst - Hochstuckli or Brunni
  • Brunni - Furggelenstock - Brunnelistock - Holzegg - Brunni

These are all easy winter hikes accessible by public transport in an hour or so from Zürich.

Ok! Thanks for your reply - that's good to know. We would like to go without snowshoes. Do you have any suggestions for hikes where this would be possible (now)? Or do you know where we can find information about snow levels in different altitudes?

Re: Hike: Einsiedeln-Unterägeri

Well, from my flat I can see that there is snow on the Zugerberg, which is about 1,000 metres. I've been away for the last ten days though, so am not really sure how much of it there is.

Have you already dome the walk along the Albis, from Uetliberg to Sihlwald/ Sihlbrugg/Hausen (several finish points possible)? That's probably doable without snowshoes, and would take about six hours altogether. I did it at the very start of 2013 - description here.

I have done this hike, but in summer, it is quite beautiful, but I would expect some snow there. Other suggestion in this area is Pfaffikon - Einsiedeln. Its part of this hike - http://www.wanderland.ch/en/routes/etappe-01177.html
