Re: Highland games 2017

This Scottish Highland games meeting is still going for the 15th year running.
It was the last of the 3 day event today at Fehraldorf Airstrip, near Pfaffikon, Zürich.
My husband is Scottish so I suggested we go as I thought he'd enjoy it, we had a great day, arrived at 10am and stayed all day watching the pipe and drum bands. Also the Clans competing in the various games. We took our Swiss neighbours as they are so kind to us always taking us on days out here, we thought we could show them a little bit of Scottish culture.
There are plenty of camping and motorhme spaces in the adjacent field if you wanted to stay for the full 3 days
We will definitely be going again next year.
Apparently it's organised by the guy who owns the Fahreldorf Airstrip Runway Restaurant, we called in there afterwards for something to eat and drink. I'd also recommend the place, its directly on the wanderweg between Pfäffikon, ZH and Fehraldorf. It got a very friendly, cosy atmosphere

Re: Highland games 2014

I went a couple of times to support grumpygrapefruit when he used to turn up with the Mousetrap Roadshow.

Good fun but a rather odd collection of Goths and Fantasy fans jumping onto the bandwaggon. I managed to gain raised eyebrows when I mistakenly assumed a lady with pointy ears had come as a Vulcan ( she was an Elf ).

He's a top bloke. I used to go every year in the years after I started the British Cheese Centre and did very well selling special Scottish cheeses. But the last 2 years I was there ('11 and '12, or maybe until '13 I think) it got taken over more by Goths and Medieval re-enactors to the point that 70% or more of visitors weren't interested in anything Scottish.

But some friends went on Saturday to see how Scottish it is these days, so I don't rule out not going again next year.

Glad you enjoyed it, I always had a blast, loads of lovely friendly people!

Re: Highland games 2014

I must admit, I did wonder what we were letting ourselves in for when we parked up next the black souped up 'Zombie Outbreak Vehicle' But all turned out well as the driver of that vehicle was one of only about 30 people I'd say dressed as goths/zombies, way way less than previous years by the sound of it. Far outweighed by those in kilts (and or normal attire of course).

I did look out for you grumpy, as your previous posts on EF were what lead me to the event in the first place. I hope you'll make a return to it one day.

Re: Highland games 2014

There used to be a Highland Games meeting in August at St Ursen near Fribourg. The website states: 11 April 2013 - cancelled.

Anyone know why? It was well supported,

The guys who organised it had enough of all the hard work (for no pay, they initially did it for the fun), and the local commune office were not helpful to them, too many regulations and not enough local support.

Damn, it was last week-end. I can't believe I missed your post and the Highland Games! Maybe we could combine and travel in one car next year?

Thanks Grumpy, I met you there on 2 occasions, and in those days there were a maximum of around 10'000 visitors, according to the Freiburg News.

I didn't enjoy it very much: the interesting traditional events were held very early, before 10 am, and probably before the contestants had enjoyed their first drink...? By the time I arrived at 12.00 it was virtually all over, until the musical events began around 4 pm.

Were you there that time I was seriously hit on by a medieval wench?

I don't remember it quite like that, I seem to remember the serious games going on until about lunchtime then the music and marching bands in the afternoon, then partying and serious drinking late into the night.

It was certainly much more authentic and serious than the Fehraltorf games and the weekend was one the highlights of my year.

Just because I had a very short pink kilt and drank most of your hot toddy, doesn't make me a wench

My famous memories of these games were helping at your stall with Nick and J, followed by mini mimi sticking her hand on a hot grill and being drenched in a horse bath......
