| | Trip to Uetliberg tomorrow.
Hello! Me and my friend have found this section in a Lonely Planet booklet and fancy taking a trip tomorrow. I was just wondering; i live in Thalwil and a day card to and from Zurich is 13.80 for me. Im on the understanding that this also allows me to get trams and trains in the two different zones. From the section below that is contained in the book...could anyone tell me if my ticket would cover me for the journey we will be taking tomorrow...or will i have to purchase an extra ticket?
'Worth a trip: UETLIBERG
A top half-day trip from Zurich starts off by taking the train (line S10) from Hauptbahnof to Uetliberg at 870m (20 minutes, half-hourly). A five minute uphill walk takes you to the top of the mountain, where you have fine views over the city and lake and the chance to climb a 30m high viewing deck of the 72m high, triangular-based Uetliberg Aussichtsturm (viewing tower), not to be confused with the nearby TV tower. From here, follow the one and a half hour Planetenweg (Planetary Path) along the at times heavily wooded mountain ridge as it gently dips and rises en route to Felsenegg. You pass scaled models of the planets and enjoy lake views along the way. Various other walking and mountain-bike trails also criss-cross the mountain countryside. At Felsenegg, a cable car descends every six - 10 minutes to Adliswill, from where frequent trains return to Zurich (line S4, 16 minutes). Buy the Sfr16.40 Albis-Netzkrte, which gets you to Uetliberg and back with unlimited travel downtown.'
Thank you!

Uetliberg is outside the Zürich 110 zone, so if you are not covered for that then you need an extension ticker for 1 zone.

you will need to buy an extension, I think Thalwill-ZH are zones 145&110 while going up the Uetliberg you need additionally zone 154/155 (dont go with the zone numbers though, this just to demonstrate that they are not in the same zone). you will need to purchase a 1-2 zone addition for about 6fr (no half fare card)

There's the zone map for Zurich. Thalwil is in zone 150, Zurich is in zone 110 (which counts as 2 zones), and the S10 train to Uetliberg goes through 2 zones (154 & 155, because it's a tourist trap, but still worth it), so you will need all 5 zones to go up and back. Your day card from Thalwil to Zurich only covers three, so you could buy an Anschlussbillette for 2 more zones, if you like.
Other options include walking up from Triemli (inside Zone 110), which takes about 60-90 minutes, depending on your pace. | Quote: | | | | | you will need to buy an extension, I think Thalwill-ZH are zones 145&110 while going up the Uetliberg you need additionally zone 154/155 (dont go with the zone numbers though, this just to demonstrate that they are not in the same zone). you will need to purchase a 1-2 zone addition for about 6fr (no half fare card) | | | | | |

Another option would be the cable car from Adliswil, which is in zone 150. You would only need to add one extra zone (155) to do it that way.
See http://www.laf.ch/fahrplan-tickets/tickets-preise.html.

| | | | | If you girls do that, make sure you have the right shoes. I don't understand why people think they can hike in converse shoes (thinking of my sister here ;o)).
And remember it can be quite windy and cold at the top - so pretty please make sure you have warm clothes (gloves, hat, a good layers).
Uetliberg is great if the visibility is good. Check the Uto Kolm webcams [URL="http://en.swisswebcams.ch/webcam/1139839663-Hotel-UTO-KULM-Nord-(8143-Uetliberg)_Wetter"]here.
Have a good Sunday!

Have a good Sunday! | | | | | It's usually about 1-3 ° C colder up there - and very windy (because nothing blocks the wind). So the wind-chill alone will be substantial.
In fact, looking at WeatherPro says:
"Temperature: -4°C, feels like -13°C"
Solid, warm shoes are recommended.
Walking from Felsenegg (where the cable-car goes) to Uto Kulm takes quite a while.
But it's a very nice walk IMO.
So close to the city, so removed from its noise, hectic and stress.

Best way down Uetliberg today will be with a toboggan. There was a fresh dump of snow overnight.

It is definitely worth doing the walk along the top. I like to start at the uto Kulm end and walk to Felsenegg, there is a really nice restaurant just the other side of the cable car terminal where they do classic Swiss mountain food (incl. Fondue) - it's a good place for lunch after you have worked up an appetite. As others have said - wear sensible walking shoes - especially at this time of year.

Forgot to say - look up the fare from your place to Uetliberg on the sbb website - you can then check for the day pass rate - I know that from Zurich you go through 3 zones so you need to make sure you have all of the right ones covered.

Paying for a ticket in a machine or on a phone application is on no way equivalent or relevant to splitting a large dinner bill among multiple people.
To put it simply in that context nick, you are something of failure when it comes to being witty, and I just wanted to point that out in case you were in any doubt, or under any own delusion, of your own comedic abilities.

Well thanks for sorting that out. It's good to see someone on the EF takes things seriously and can bring a tad of common sense to the situation.
Anyway, best go as my roast spuds are almost done. | Quote: | | | | | The key to being genuinely witty is to make a joke or pun that is both relevant. and humorous to the issue being discussed. i got a few of my posts deleted the other day because they were completely irrelevant. i have absolutely no idea whats going on here but im certain it has nothing to do with the topic at hand.
thank you to everyone for your friendly and very helpful feedback. we didnt end up going on sunday as it was snowing so much we assumed visibility from the top would be pretty awful.
but were going to save it for a lovely day and will consider everything everyone has suggested on here.
thanks again

Don't do this in the winter when their's lots of snow, with a pram.
It will be really tough going.
Also, note that it can be incredibly icy underfoot up there this time of year.

Also, bare in mind that it can be incredibly icy up there this time of year. | | | | | Only cracked my Coccyx the once up there while running!!!
The lower paths are well covered with the main ones having had a basic clear (IE maintaining a base layer of compacted snow). The lower paths were very icy the last couple of weeks

I've been pretty bruised from running up there.
TBH, I won't run up there this time of year unless I'm carrying some running spikes.
