| | Travel from Basel Airport to Weil am Rhein
Does anybody know whether it is possible to travel via public transport from Basel airport to Weil am Rhein in Germany. I'm looking to get to Freiburg cheaply and noticed that it would be cheaper to catch a bus to Basel and then a train to Freiburg for two people using a baden-wurttemberg ticket, than it would to catch a direct bus to Freiburg from the airport. However, if I could get to Weil am Rhein, I could catch the train from there rather than going to Basel.

Yes, its relatively straight forward.
The simplest way is the 50 Airport bus to Basel SBB (centre of Town) and then you take the new Number 8 tram service direct to Weil am Rhein train station.

You can catch the train from the other station in Basel, Badischer Bahnhof. It's in Basel but part of the German network and the BW tickets are valid.
From the airport baggage reclaim/exit, exit to Switzerland (if you take the France exit you'll need to go upstairs to departures, walk across, and back down again).
Buy a 2-zone ticket from the machine by the bus stop or the ticket office inside by baggage reclaim.
Either ... take Bus 50 to Brausebad (stop before last) and change to Tram 6.
Or take Bus 50 to SBB (main station, last stop) and then Tram 2.
Or, and I've not looked into this apart from googling "euroairport freiburg", see if you can take the bus all the way http://www.freiburger-reisedienst.de.../timetable.php | This user would like to thank adrianlondon for this useful post: | |

Did you look at ordering tickets on the DB (Deutsch Bahn) site for the whole journey? They are usually cheaper than ordering from a Swiss site?

It will be expensive.
You are better off catching the number 50 bus from outside the Swiss Arrivals door.
Buy a 3 zone ticket, and take the bus to the end (Basel SBB station).
From there you should walk over to the tram stop area, to the platform on the right hand side as you face away from the station, and get the number 8 tram into Weil am Rhein.
The trams and buses all run at least every 10-15 mins during the day.
Check the local publc transport site for times and prices. I am pretty sure you can use Euros or Swiss Francs in the machine at the airport. http://bvb.ch/en/home

First take the Bus No.50 from the Airport to the Kannenfeldplatz, there you change to Tram No.1(to the Dreirosenbrücke), where you change to Tram No.8
to Weil/Rhein.
Saves around 15 mins(there is no need to go into the citycenter to catch the tram No.8 to weil am rhein).
The tram No.8 from the SBB station is mostly packed because of the route the tram takes(SBB-Claraplatz-Kleinhüningen-Weil/Rhein).

Ticket machines have an English language option. You can use Euros at the airport IIRC, but also plastic.
If you type in the destination it will tell you the fare and provide the right ticket. Once you have the ticket, you are free to use whichever public transport option you wish to use, whether the more complex route or simpler*, as long as it is an unbroken journey (a 1 zone ticket lasts 1 hr, a 2 zone 2 hrs... etc). If you are traveling with a lot of luggage, take the easier option: #50 bus to station and then #2 tram to BBhf or #8 tram to Weil-am-Rhein.
Although I would say that accessing the BBhf from #2 is easier than getting to the Weil-am-Rhein station from #8.
*Both the #8 and #2 trams can be busy, but usually only bad at rush hour, and it is all relative. Rush hour usually lasts until the next tram in Basel...

sorry to be stupid but what station does BBhf stand for thank-you as i am weighing up all my options , in my last post roughly how long would it take or would it be quicker to get bus to town and catch the connection that way

Here are some screen shots of what the ticket machines look like, etc. You can select English as the language so that helps. http://www.lifeinbasel.com/2013/03/0...tram-in-basel/
Here is the route plan: http://www.tnw.ch/fileadmin/redacteu...Basel_2016.pdf
Keep in mind it also depends on what time you are coming in to the airport. Personally, I would rather take less connections even if it means more time, (what if it is raining?) so I would go in to the main rail station (SBB) and change there.
Lots of trams and busses go to Badischer Banhof and it is in Zone 10 - so only a 2 zone ticket from the airport is needed. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basel_Badischer_Bahnhof
Good luck.
Oh, and if it is late at night, and not sure about the service at the train station, you can also by your DB ticket online. http://www.bahn.com/i/view/index.shtml

One last tip: I find the machines prefer larger denomination coins rather than smaller. Stick with the 1 Euro or the 1,2 and 5 CHF coins and you will be fine. I have encountered machines who seem to be full of the smaller coins and they will just fall through.
