The Storks Are Back From The South

OH saw a stork on its nest in Avenches on Thursday last so we decided to go out to Altreu in Solothurn canton and see if they'd arrived there too. And yes, there were several pairs already claiming their nesting spots. Haven't started building up their nests yet, but it won't be long. We go over several times a year to watch their progress and see the young ones once they're born. :) They also have an info centre in the village which is open from April to October - opens on the 15th April this year.

Ned Stark.

Game Of Thrones.

Dead.

No Stork.

Still saying what? Has nothing to do with my opening post and a bit difficult to confuse Storks with Stark - unless you happen to be drunk on a sunny Sunday afternoon. ;)

Frogs have also started they migration to breeding ponds much earlier than normal. Conditions today are very Spring like- 15C in the valley and 9C up at 950 metres- totally bonkers.

Not been a good breeding season. Altreu has 42 breeding pairs, but only 29 young born. Only 5 had two young and many had none at all. :( Last year several pairs had 4 young each.

Don't know about Stork. More of a Flora man myself.

So much for teaching the teenagers about contraception.

This year in Altreu, plenty of nests and very few young birds. The weather was too cold.

Yeah, the nest in your first pic Big Mara had 4 young last year. We were afraid they'd lose one before they could fly because the nest was so crowded.

A pair of storks have settled in Bern, one with, & one without a ring,

so presumably they are not yet married...

Yes, they're back at Altreu too. We went out to see if they were last Saturday as the OH had spotted a stork on the nest in Avenches he sees when driving to/from work. And yes, a lot of them are back and busy building nests. :) Though with the recent windy weather they probably will have to make more repairs.

Kites are back too.

Let's hope storks do better this year. In 2016 more than 50% of youngsters died due to the very wet conditions in summer- combination of waterlogged feathers and lack of food.

Or one of them is cheating on it's usual partner?

Unlikely as they're monogamous. But it could be that the partner died and the other now has a new partner. :)

"It is a monogamous breeder, but does not pair for life."

"Although a pair may be found to occupy a nest, partners may change several times during the early stages and breeding activities begin only after a stable pairing is achieved."

Went out to Altreau this morning and it was great to see that nearly all the nests have occupants. We even saw 3 new nests as the space on top of the visitor centre is now occupied again, having been vacant for the last 2-3 years, and also the two platforms they'd built in the visitor centre gardens also have been occupied for the first time since they were put up. :D Let's hope they have another bumper crop of young ones.

The nest on the visitor centre has a camera tuned to it so you can watch the nest from inside the centre on the telly there.

Happy to report that most of the nests seem to have at least 1 little one, despite the unseasonable weather in April. :)

Went out today to see them. Youngsters are reaching the point where they're trying out their wings, flapping around but not quite brave enough to try and take off for a short flight yet.

The parents have done well this year. From 43 breeding pairs they've produced 60 young so much better than last year's total. :)

They're returning already. :) Hubby saw one flying in Lausanne last Friday and has seen another on the nest at Avenches this evening. Will have to take a trip out to Altreu in the next couple of weeks to see how many are back.

March-April would have been more like normal. Last year they were in Altreu in record numbers.

Saw 4 storks in a field outside Avenches when we went shopping this evening. They're definitely coming back for the summer. :) Just in time for the cold snap next week.

Went down to IENA this morning and there were about 8 on the nests there then drove over to Altreu where there were about 15. :)

Let's hope they breed as successfully as they did last year.

Pleased to say that all but one nest has a pair on it at Altreu and that includes sites that weren't used for the last few years. Looks like more than usual have managed to get back and set up home. :) Let's hope there's another bumper crop of little'uns in a few months' time. Visitor centre will open it's doors on the 15th April until the 15th October.

As many as possible. :D

Went out to Altreu today and there are little ones in the nests. The one on top of the info centre has 4, possibly 5, little ones (you can see them on live stream there). Another nest has 3. Cross fingers they all grow up into young adults as the summer progresses. :)

And they're back again! 20 nests down at IENA in Avenches and most of the nests in Altreu are occupied as well. :)

It's that time of the year again. Storks are coming home. :D Several nests occupied at Altreu already. Notice on the gate at the visitor centre said last year they had 80 young from 35 breeding pairs - good number.

There's a couple of storks in Pfäffikon ZH next to the lake, they stayed there the whole winter and are mating since almost 3 weeks now...
