Hi,
Anyone did a Croatia trip with a car?
We plan to spend 10 days in Croatia and not sure about the starting point. Fly to Zagreb or Dubrovnik or ?

Please share your experiences.

thanks

Re: Croatia Trip

We flew to Split and then drove to Dubrovnik, on to Kotor, Budva, lake Skadar, up to Žabljak and cut back to Split via Mostar. Three countries in 10 days. A brilliant trip. The Croatian coast is amazing, clean clear water and not many people, if you're smart. Take the cable car to the hill above Dubrovnik.

We were surprised to see so many Swiss tourists, all in big black SUVs, from all cantons. The mystery deepened on the Kotor car ferry. They don't speak Swiss ???? Finally our host in Budva told us the secret - Albanians driving home to show the fruits of their business success to their families.

Re: Croatia Trip

We drove to Porec few years ago to spend some tennis holidays in autumn. It was a smooth journey and awesome drive along the coast line. The location was at the northernmost tip of Croatia. Therefore not that much strain on the driver for what it was worth. The journey was via Italy and Slovenia covering distance of 800km. It's also possible to take the route via Austria-Italy and Slovenia, which is about 60km shorter but you miss out some nice coast line.

However, if I were to go to Dubrovnik, I would rather fly down there and rent the car locally. Price wise, it's very affordable country and great value for your money. If you convert CHF to HRK (Croatian kuna), you rule ...

Re: Croatia Trip

i would suggest that you start in Zagreb. Drive to Plitvice lakes from there. You can then choose to go to Zadar or Split from there. Also, in case you are interested in visiting Mostar, you can drive to Dubrovnik via Mostar from Split. It depends on how many destinations you wish to cover and the pace you wish to keep. Fly back from Dubrovnik.

Re: Croatia Trip

Last summer we flew to Dubrovnik, hired a car, spent a few days in Dubrovnik and did a circuit of Montenegro (Herceg Novi, Kotor, Podgorica, Budva and back to Herceg Novi via the ferry). Was beautiful, especially between Kotor and Podgorica (interesting road....).

Re: Croatia Trip

My advice is to fly to Split or Dubrovnik and from there rent a car or use a taxi transportation, whose prices are surprisingly low and affordable, about which you can find out more here.

The Croatian coast and the sea are beautiful, plus it has a large number of islands that can be included in a day trip. My recommendation is to come to Split and then visit Šibenik, Korčula, Hvar, Dubrovnik, Kornati and if you have time to make a short trip to Montenegro. You should certainly renta a car or use one of the many cheap taxi transports, in order to maximally relax and enjoy without having to worry

Re: Croatia Trip

We rented a car and drove to Croatia last summer. We drove down via Austria and Slovenia. We stopped in Salzburg for lunch and a little wander around the city and then drove on down through Slovenia. We also had Lake Bled and Ljubljana on our list of possible stop options but didn't end up stopping because we took more time in Salzburg than expected. We first drove down to Pula and spent a couple of days there. We then drove to Lake Plitvice National Park for a few days and on one of those days made a day trip up to Zagreb. Finally, we drove home via Venice and stayed a few days there as well. We're slow, non-scheduling, wander around type of vacation people so we enjoyed having the car and driving around and stopping as we desired. We didn't do Dubrovnik this time around but that's on our list for a future trip!

How about going this Easter? Will it be too cold too early to visit?

We are also planning to spend Easter holidays there. Is it a good time being there you think?

Re: Croatia Trip

If you plan on going during "holiday" season don't drive down, you'll get stuck in traffic at the border. Going during Easter can be tricky, the weather can be tricky.

Re: Croatia Trip

This all sounds very tempting! Are hotels easy to come by? Would people recommend booking in advance?

Re: Croatia Trip

I would recommend early june or mid september. weather great, you can swim in the sea and not to many tourist.
if you wanna go during easter, go south (Split, Dubrovnik) because the chance is that the weather will be better than on north (Plitvička jezera, Istra)

Zagreb is always great. I guarantee as born Purgerka (Croatian word for people born in Zagreb with family that comes for few generations from Zagreb)

Re: Croatia Trip

Hi,we went to Croatia 2 years ago with Mirya Yachting ( www.croatiaguletcruises.com ) and went to Montenegro 3 months ago with our car.
Between Herce Novi and Podgorica road is amazing. Dont go fast, be slow cause of roads !!
But probably all Adriatic coast is very touristic for the prices !
Montenegro is a not member of European Union but currency rate is Euro.

I know a guy who took his family on a bicycle trip to Croatia.

Seemed nuts to me.

Good luck with it all.

Joining in ..

We're planning a road trip to Croatia too in summer.. Probalbly up north, Umag with an overnight stop over each way around Verona or Venice.

Looks like it'll be a fair old trip.

Re: Croatia Trip

We drove from Zadar, all the way down to Montenegro then back to Dubrovnic a few years ago. If you're flying back from Dubrovnic then Cavtat is worth a stay on your last night. It's only 10km to the airport and most hotels will drive you there for free....

We didn't fancy the detour to Plitvice falls so went to Krka instead and regretted it. The falls in Krka are only a short walk from the car park if you go the right way (to the left from memory). We went the long way round and took a pointless boat trip to an island monastery. Don't do that.

We booked our hotels in advance, but as you approach most towns you will find people on the side of the road holding out signs for accomodation. If you're the adventurous type this could work out to be a cheap and unforgettable way to see the country.

We found that a few Croatian words go a long way when dealing with people, although this is the same in most places really...

Have fun!

Re: Croatia Trip

We flew to Zagreb, rent there a car and drove to Dubrovnik, where stayed most of our vocations. We were lucky to rent a townhouse at a great price at the very beginning of the season, something like this https://tranio.com/croatia/adt/1545306/, most of the coast villas look amazing.

We also visited Montenegro, driving along the coat is really stunning.
These places are underestimated, or probably not promoted enough, but it’s a great combination of beautiful nature, good weather, cultural heritage, lovely people and decent prices, totally worth it.

Re: Croatia Trip

Can anyone recommend a decent hotel between Ljubljana and Zagreb on route to Belgrade?
I will be driving this route in 2 weeks and need and nice clean place for the overnight rest. (wouldn't mind if is 10-20 off the motorway)

Last time I didn't do my homework, just drove and decided to stop at the first place when I get tired. That happened to be Motel Plitvice. Hmmm.
Never again. Even for a non fussy chap like me.
