Re: Slow Up Season 2016

It's a day where cyclists and walkers take to the streets. There are specific routes you can follow but it's basically just a nice family day out. Lots of towns organise them.
I was just looking at a leaflet we received about the Murten slow up a few minutes ago.

Re: Slow Up Season 2016

"32km of human powered mobility: cycling, skating, skate boarding, hiking, running, skipping or jumping. The Lake Murten SlowUp is a car free dream and will be excellent fun for the entire family!

The SlowUp recipe is as easy as pie: Take approximately 30 km of roads in a picturesque area, close off the streets to motorized traffic for one whole day and provide a fun and diverse program all along the route. It turns into the most incredible party that is always on the move: Young and the young at heart, groups and families, outdoor people, sporty types, leisurely walkers, handholding lovers and even lonely hearts enjoy this happy SlowUp mood in a motor free area."

http://www.murtentourismus.ch/en/eve...ke-murten.html

They happen all through the spring/summer/autumn in different parts of Switzerland, but Murten's is always the first.

Edit: Um, seems I was wrong. There's one down in Ticino on the 17th April (tomorrow) which is the first.

Re: Slow Up Season 2016

Avoid these slow ups, they are dangerous. You will find yourself cycling in close proximity with about 100 inexperienced people. Sometimes you will find roller and in-line skaters with you!

Then someone in the front of the hundred people near you, will suddenly stop at the sight of a wine bottle. They turn around and ask their friends if they also fancy a drink.

Everyone else must quickly brake, or swerve into someone else, to avoid them. That is what happens at Murten-Morat Slow Up. You won't die, but there are endless possibilities of minor injuries.

This!

I accidentally stumbled across the Zurisee one last year - was on a recovery ride with a friend after a big day in the mountains and didn't know it was on. Never before have I been more terrified on a bike, that includes commuting in central London, and descending Alpine passes at over 70kph.

The lack of spatial awareness and road sense was staggering, people stopping and turning without even the first glance, kids on scooters jumping on and off the pavement and people stopping for a chat in the middle of the road were just some of the opportunities for bodily harm and general peril.

Never again!

As a walker, I agree. It's like an enormous festival of rolling dickheadery.

One to avoid.

That doesn't work. You are cycling on a normal 2 lane country road, if you slow down hundreds of cyclists will try and overtake you, dangerous for everyone. You must cycle at the same speed as the massive crowd around you.

I've been to several without incident.

Of course, you need to have awareness and anticipate people will suddenly stop when they see a beer tent and generally allow enough time and space to be able to deal with erratic behaviour.

Last year we were at a restaurant on the route of the slow up in Zurich and we watched an e-biker go airborne after hitting a bloke on a scooter. E-biker was going FAR too fast given the volume of people out and couldn't react in time to the bloke on the scooter who had spontaneously turned in the road to check where his brood were behind him.

Luckily they were both English speakers so we could fully enjoy the heated verbals as our main course was brought out.
