Family holiday with kids and grandparents

Hi guys, my parents (in their 70ís) will be coming to visit for a couple of weeks in October. Instead of staying in Basel, Iíd like to go away for a week with them and my children (aged 5). Iíve done a search here but havenít come up with anything exactly what Iím looking for or recent.

But I was hoping to get some ideas from others on a good place to go. It doesnít necessarily need to be in Switzerland, but somewhere not too far where we could drive. Bearing in mind that my parents are past the stage of anything too physical and beach/pool holidays would be out. But we also need some activities to keep the kids entertained. Any ideas?

We went to Oberammergau and on to the Berchtesgaden area and Salzburg recently (they're really close) and there's a mixture of lovely castles, beautiful little towns, lots of old and modern history and really friendly locals.
Great places to eat too.
Oberammergau has lots of things for kids too.
