Best way to travel to Lucca, Italy, from Zurich?

Hi All,

I'm travelling to Lucca at the end of October and was wondering whether anybody has tips on the best way to get there?

Is travelling via Florence with Swiss the best option, or is it just as easy and perhaps cheaper to travel by train?

Thanks in advance,
Chris

I'd go by motorcycle.

Re: Best way to travel to Lucca, Italy, from Zurich?

Good find ch2013! Thanks.

Unfortunately it looks like there are no buses available for my dates of travel. However I also found that easyJet has really cheap flights from Basel to Pisa. Worth checking out if anybody is travelling to Florence, Lucca or Pisa.

Thanks again,
Chris

If at all possible, I would do it by car. It takes longer than rail or air, but it is a lovely stretch at that time of year.

No longer than rail (8 hours with 2 changes, Milan and Florence) and a lovely stretch indeed. 560 Km, let's say 6h30?

Agree, but have a plan as to what you do with the car when you get there. Its a maze within the walls and anything larger than a Fiat 500 is almost impossible to drive within the city.

Well, you don't need a car within the walls, and you can't use a car within the ZTL without a permit. Just park outside the walls and walk, the best way to enjoy te city.

You can still follow st2lemans suggestion. Have a look here

I'd definitely fly to Pisa and take a train from there, that should be the most convenient. The airport and train station are very close to each other in Pisa.

"Pisa Aeroporto" is the train stop just outside the terminal. There are trains and Bus (and Taxis) to "Pisa Centrale". Worst case scenario half an hour walking (less than what you have to walk inside major airports).
