Is Bellinzona worth an autumn day trip?

I'm thinking of doing a daytrip with my spouse on Saturday to Bellinzona. The weather will be relatively pleasant.

Is Bellinzona good for a day trip? Any good restaurants or cafes that you recommend? Also, is this a good time for fall foliage?

Funny, there seem to be all sorts of colours in the trees around the mountains/San Bernadino this year

Yes, It's too late for me to recommend specific places, but anywhere like that is worth it if you expect it to be.

That's the mountains, around here they are only changing in the last few days.

Did you make it there? Was it worth it? I visited Bellinzona 6 years ago in Spring. It was a very nice town. Interesting castles.

We went to Bellinzona recently. Nice town with three old forts, a big church, and a nice street, all near the station. However, I feel it is a nice stop over for 3-4 hours than a full day trip.

Depends on what you do. Walking up to the middle castle was a blast.

We drove up yesterday due to the crap detour signs.

Worked out fine, my friend, whom I hadn't seen in 36 years, made his slow train to Zurich, and got some great castle pictures.

And my wife and I scored a couple kg of three year old Alp cheese afterwards!

Definitely. The castles are beautiful. There is a weekly market, I think on Saturdays.

Why stop in Bellinzona? Come to the Festa delle Castagne in Ascona this coming Saturday.

Too many German speakers in Ascona.

Locarno is also very near. The Madonna des Sasso is beautiful and the way there with the small train very picturesque. We visited it this year.

It's a funicular, not a train.

You can also get there by car.

Val Verzasca, Valle Maggia , Centovalli and Val Onsernone all are great places to visit and hike.
One more reason I prefer the Locarno region to the Lugano region and yes I have lived in the Lugano region for 15 years, Paradiso and Davesco.
Lugano has become somewhat to ( fill in blank ).
And I do not mind hearing some german in Ascona, after all I am half swiss german.
