Titlis, Pilatus, or Rigi in end of November?

Hi,

We have friends visiting from Germany and would like to visit Luzern area together. None of us have been to Luzern nor the mountains around it, so I'm wondering which mountain among Titlis, Pilatus, or Rigi would provide the best experience for us considering the weather/season (end of November). Factors to be considered are: we are traveling with a 3 year old child and driving to Luzern.

Since my friends have never seen the Alps, I think they would like to see the snow covered mountain, like Titlis. But, I heard the view from the top of Pilatus is very nice. And, I also like the idea of taking the boat on your way to Rigi.

Can we still expect to see a beautiful scenery at the end of November from the top of Pilatus or on the way to Rigi? Last year I took the Goldenpass from Montreaux to Zurich, but was disappointed with the scenery because it was just brown and grey... all the trees were barren and no snow. I don't want to experience the same thing with Pilatus or Rigi. If that's going to be the case, I guess it's just better to go for the snow on Titlis...

Please help! Thanks!

Wait until the end of November and ask your question again. Today, all 3 of those peaks were above the fog, beautiful views and there was snow on the ground. Hard to say what it's going to be like in 2 weeks.

You can include a boat ride as part of your journey from Luzern to either of those destinations. Not so exciting though if it's foggy down there though.

I went up Rigi just over a week ago and it was gorgeous. Covered in fresh snow, and we were above the clouds so we escaped the miserable weather below. Just check the webcams up top to see what it is like on the actual day.

The boats operate under a reduced schedule during the cold season, see here for this PDF. And keep in mind that it'll be fricking cold outside, one because of the temperature of course and two because of the chill factor by the "Fahrtwind", the wind caused by the ship moving.

An alternative may be one of these (from this page), a culinary cruise in the evening, perhaps combine a boat trip with a fine Fondue or Raclette.

Trips for views cannot be planned more than a couple of days in advance. Or, to be more accurate, there must be a plan B in case the weather is unsuitable.

I've been up Rigi and Pilatus and they're both gorgeous! There's cog railways to the top of both if you don't want to do the steep walking. Pilatus has the world's steepest cog railway, and depending on your opinion of things on mountaintops, a nice restaurant complex at the top where you can watch the paragliders. There's also several short, fairly flat walks to good viewpoints from there. Rigi also has places to eat and drink, although if I recall correctly the trails are slightly longer between places.

Re: Titlis, Pilatus, or Rigi in end of November?

From my experience, on the Pilatus you have a great view of the Zentralschweiz but normal landscape. You see the lakes, regognize some cities and some mountains. It has a nice round trip where you can take a boat in front of the KKL Luzern till Alpnachstad where the world's steppest cogwheel railway can take you up to the Pilatus and then go down with the gondola lift.

On the Titlis, when you go up till Klein Titlis with the Rotair (360° rotating gondola lift), the view around is amazing but limited to rocky glaciers. There are some nice activities for kids (like the cave, or the cliff walk). I usually go there to ski only so I can't share a full experience.

I would say, Pilatus in summer, Titlis in Winter.

Near to Luzern is also Stanserhorn. But that I'll recommend also during summer time because of its highlight, the roofless gondola.

One advantage of Rigi is that everything (train to get there, ferry, cablecar, gondola) is included in the SBB day tickets.

Re: Titlis, Pilatus, or Rigi in end of November?

For an outside visiter, Rigi has a nice enough view but is the least spectacular experience as a climb.

Pilatus is nice if the weather is nice, and has the right mix of everything for a pleasant trip

Titlis is more effort and more expensive but gets you a lot higher, depending on how important that is, and you get to take the cable car over a glacier on the way up. But it takes quite a while to get up and down from Lucerne.

If your visitors expect a bigger adventure, go for Titlis. If they are relaxed, go for Pilatus.

We have been to all three. The weather can be fast changing up there, particularly in Titlis. As the other posts suggest, from Titlis you can see nice view of snow capped mountains, from Pilatus mostly landscape of nearby areas, and from Rigi mostly the lake and nearby cities.

Re: Titlis, Pilatus, or Rigi in end of November?

One of my personal favourite trips when I have visitors who have never been to Switzerland before is to catch the boat from Lucerne to Vitznau. For extra effect, make sure you catch one of the paddle steamers (the timetable tells you which ones they are). They cost the same as the modern boats but are so much more fun. If you are feeling generous, go in the first class where you get a better view and more quiet and can recline in a comfy armchair in beautiful are deco surroundings with a glass of prosecco while admiring the majestic mountains as they slowly slip past.

Then get off at Vitznau and catch the Vitznau Rigi bahn up to Rigi Kulm, maybe do a short walk up at Kulm (or if you have more time go and spend an hour or two in the spa at Kaltbad) and then go down the Rigi with the train on the other side to Arth Goldau. Fast train back to Zürich.

Re: Titlis, Pilatus, or Rigi in end of November?

Those are all beautiful trips, but in November (and anytime) you need to be very careful and make sure you choose the right day...

1. Depending on the weather, these mountains can be completely covered in fog with zero visibility. If this is the case, you will see absolutely nothing after an expensive and long trip. You absolutely should check the weather before you leave.

2. All of these mountains will be extremely cold in Nov. Take Titlis for example. It is above 3000 m. Absolutely bring winter clothing, ski pants, winter caps and gloves and proper winter boots. For example, right now it is 2° on top of Titlis -e beginning of Oct. (and 14° in the village in Engelberg). It cost quite a lot to get to the top and you don't want to be frustrated that you can't enjoy it due to not having the proper clothing.

3. Do you enjoy short walks or hikes. Most tourists just take the train or cable car from the top to the bottom, but on all of the mountains there are nice walks that can be done ranging from just a few minutes to hours and hours. Obviously, this depends on the weather and having a three year old. But, if you like to walk, check the websites and see what is possible.

4. This is basically still low season in the mountains. There isn't yet quite enough snow for winter sports, but it is much too cold and gets dark too early for real hiking or other mountain sports. The amount of snow varies drastically from year to year, so you should really check the websites and webcams frequently as there is no guarantee.

5. If you need an indoor activity in Luzern (and like this type of thing), the Verkehrshaus museum is just fantastic.

6. If you go to Engelberg, it isn't such a pretty town to visit, but there are some worthwhile places to see. Google quickly to check it out.

good luck and have a great time...
