Balloon Festival Château-d'Oex

Parmigiani Fleurier, watchmakers, will be sponsoring the 39th Hot Air Balloon Festival in Chateau d'Oex near Gruyères/Gstaad - from 21st to 29th January (later edit- yes, as they have always done).

That's something which is still on my "wanna do"-list .... but not really in a festival-enviroment I think.

I've been to this a couple of times, it's a really great day out if the weather is good/blue sky.
The blimps are fantastic. Balloon flights need to be booked in advance, but helicopter rides can be done on the day.

It's a perfect event for photographers if the sky is clear.

A huge admirer btw of Michel Parmigiani - the son of an Italian immigrant who had the vision, guts and courage to re-launch the local watch making industry after the post quartz (Japanese) debacle via very High End quality horology- and later the Fleurier Quality Label.

It's well worth it and on a nice day, plenty of beer and sausages available.....but weather does have to be nice.

Best way is to take train from Montreux to Ch. d'Oex as parking is sometimes problamatic.

Re: Balloon Festival Château-d'Oex

We went once years ago. Got there early around 8.30am iirc in case parking was difficult. Balloons were supposed to start flying at 10am. Not the case. Crews only started arriving around then and I think the first balloon went up around 12.30pm by which time I was starving, frozen from standing around outside for hours and wanted nothing more than to go home. The OH keeps suggesting going again, but it's not for me. If he wants to go, he can go on his own.

If it was in spring or autumn it would be different, but middle of winter - forget it.

I went there about 4 years ago, on the Wednesday afternoon which was supposed to be especially for kids.

Parking was a nightmare, we had to park very far away and then walk. Or rather I walked, dragging my eldest in his snow clothes and carrying my daughter who was only one at the time, and not in her stroller since it's impossible to use one in the snow.

All the kids' activities were packed and full of people who had obviously arrived hours in advance to secure a place. My kids were all happy when they saw the first few Mickey and Donald balloons rising in the air, but the excitement didn't last.

In the end I dropped them in the field behind the landing place and they played in the snow, which we could have done much more easily closer to home!

Re: Balloon Festival Château-d'Oex

We went on the second Saturday iirc. It was nice once the balloons got up in the air, but I'd rather have known exactly when they would be taking off, arrive and park up the car, get out and watch for half an hour/45 minutes which was all they were visible for before disappearing over the mountains and then getting back in the car and coming home. If they're going to have a schedule then they should keep to it.

This is the nature of balloon flying, sometimes the conditions are not right and you can't fly, it's not like some Boeing 737 flight !

They fly in winter as it has better conditions for flying than very hot weather, the air is heated in the balloon and hot air rises in cold air, in the summer this tends not to happen so easily, simple physics really.....

Re: Balloon Festival Château-d'Oex

Must say we've never been- only seen photos and videos. And we won't be there this time either- just thought it might be of interest to some.

Our only balloon experience was in Tanzania - it was absolutely awesome. Were driven to site in the dark to be there at dawn- taking off with a herd of elephants, giraffes and hyenas running just below was unforgettable. After landing we were served a full British Breakfast with champagne.

Over the pre-Alps would be pretty magical too, I'd say.

The weather was fine, clear skies so no problem there. I think they'd all been partying too hard the night before and couldn't be bothered to start on time.

there's more than meets the eye to balloon flying but i guess it was delayed due to meteo conditions, sometimes gets very blowy above Ch.d'Oex but you don't realise it or a down draft from Saanen

(including heavy partying )
